Lord of Ultima, the free-to-play browser-based kinda-sorta-Ultima game that Electronic Arts launched in 2010, is shutting down. EA announced today that it will be closing its virtual doors on May 12, and has started taking steps to wrap it up.

According to the announcement (via Gamasutra), EA has shut off new account registration and is no longer allowing players to purchase in-game currency. Refunds won't be offered for existing users, however, and those with in-game currency are encouraged to spend it before the shutdown. The site also provided codes to get all four ministers, to help finish the quest to become a final Lord for those still invested. EA also says it is looking into speeding up progression on worlds that aren't as close to the end-game.

"It is always hard when we are met with such choices and the decision to retire older games is never an easy one," the announcement read. "We cannot thank those who have supported us enough, and throughout the years of Lord of Ultima's existence it has been the pleasure of both past and present developers to have been on this journey with you."

EA destroyed the Ultima IP. Same with Wing Commander and Command & Conquer. Sad.
