Get Even mixes single and multiplayer in new FPS from Painkiller HD dev

Before Dishonored, Arkane Studios was working on The Crossing, an FPS which was to mix single-player and multiplayer by letting people control enemies in other people's games. While that sunk, developer The Farm 51 is raising the idea again with Get Even, announced today for PC and next-gen consoles. It's packing some fancy 3D scanning tech to turn real-world places into pretty levels, too.

While sunk, developer The Farm 51 is raising the idea again with Get Even, announced today for PC and next-gen consoles. It's packing some fancy 3D scanning tech to turn real-world places into pretty levels, too.

The studio behind NecroVisioN and Painkiller: Hell & Damnation explains that "when players embark on a single-player mission, others on the network can join the quest as enemies, so players never know whether their opponents are human or CPU-based."

This'll be realized in fancy graphics using real-world environment scanning. Some of the first screenshots look jolly nice, while others look more video game-y, though of course we don't know whether they're touched-up. The announcement trailer is a blend of real-world and in-game footage, through The Farm 51 won't say what's what, wanting you to wonder "what is real here?"

Story-wise, The Farm 51 says Get Even "mixes elements of thriller and horror with exploration," and is about the central heroes' memories. Supposedly we'll have a hand in shaping their personalities. Today's announcement also boasted about having customisable guns capable of shooting round corners (a real-world tech), so it seems caution may be encouraged.

Get Even is slated to launch in 2015 on PC and unspecified "next-gen platforms."

So it uses an element that RE6 uses that will be dead in a matter of weeks?

I don't know. For me it matters how they reward a player for taking on that role and how it balances with the "main" part of the game. The trailer looks intriguing. Of course we all know how these announcement trailers can sometimes be misleading. Dead Island, I'm looking at you.
