Sony 'Vita has more RAM than PS3'

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida reiterates that the Vita has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of V-RAM, which enables it to offer cross-game chat on the handheld.

The PlayStation Vita has been turning heads, and for good reason--the tech is immensely impressive. Sony's upcoming handheld is a powerhouse, but some have been confused about its specs. For example, how much RAM does it have? Unfortunately, that's been a question of some debate ever since rumors about a possible cut in RAM first surfaced.

"We've been making games, right, and we've been showing the games, like Uncharted, since January. If RAM gets cut in the middle of development, there's no way we can complete the games. So I was like, what's going on?," Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said.

"We always had 512MB of main RAM and 128MB of V-RAM," Yoshida clarified to Eurogamer. "Actually when you add them together, PS Vita has more RAM than PS3 [the PS3 has 256MB of XDR DRAM main memory and 256MB of GDDR3 video memory]."

Yoshida admits that "the amount of data you have to push is much smaller" on the Vita, thanks to its lowered screen resolution. So why does Vita need more memory than its console brethren? "The reason why we were able to include something like Party, which enables cross-game voice chat, is because we designed Vita so it always has enough resources to handle something like that behind the game while it's running."

While PlayStation fans have long demanded cross-game chat, it appears that only with Vita's extra memory is Sony finally able to deliver on that promise. (Sorry PS3 fans!)

.... more ram.... who cares? ram will not make it better, think of ram like the top of a table, if you lay out sheets of paper so they touch side to side, when the table cant hold anymore paper its full. its the same with ram, and thats what having more ram is. its more easily accessible data for the other components. but that does not make it better then anything. you can have 1000 terabytes of ram but still be worse then something that has 10

A big issue for the PS3 and the reason why any games look worse on it than the 360 is because it skimped on the RAM.

And its why I stick to my PC, the game is a presentation of a whole: graphics, sound, story, fun factor. Consoles have shitty graphics, always have and they always will be decades behind the PC. There are calculators out today that have more processing power than either the 360/PS3. But the console sheep are so enthralled with sitting on their couch looking at upscaled ten year old graphics because they are all are too stupid to update video drivers on their PC, so the companies keep shoveling shit their way and they pay $80 a game for it.

It's no one fault except the consumer. I don't blame sony and MS, you guys keep support them and they keep turning out what you all like. Idiocracy at it's finest!

It actually sounds like a good analogy to me. The size of your table is your RAM. A stack of pages is your disk. More RAM means a larger table means you can have more pages immediately visible to a viewer. But once your table is big enough to fit all your pages on at the same time, increasing the size of the table is pointless.

i guess i wouldn't be too surprised, a 16x jump in RAM isn't unprecedented for consoles between generations. i would put my money on 4GB though

      • reply
        August 18, 2011 3:31 PM

depending on their launch schedule, i consider that to be dubious. from my (admittedly shitty) memory, each time a new console drops its around 1/2 the spec of a decent gaming machine.

      • reply
        August 18, 2011 3:32 PM

No way, consoles have always had less RAM than PCs, and 8GB of RAM is more than most PCs even have. I'd say 4GB would be plausible.

Depends on the release. I'd consider this source credible. He works at one of the big publishers and they are definitely launch title contenders. It's possible that the dev kits have 8GB, but you don't need twice the RAM for debugging.

Ram is so cheap now and it's a great way to build a console that is future proof and buy good will from developers.

I've had 16 gigs in my current pc I bought a year and a half ago. At work 32 gigs isn't unheard of. Ram is super cheap.

          • reply
            August 18, 2011 7:37 PM

That isn't even remotely common for most pcs. Most laptops and desktops are still 2GB or 4GB of ram. 8GB tends to only show up in much higher ended models.

Sure ram is cheap relatively speaking however, when you are making a console margins are often razor thin. Your low end 8GB costs a consumer around $40. Manufacturers might get that down to $15-$20 which is still sizable when they are trying to cut costs everywhere. Hell the whole reason Microsoft didn't want to include DVD playback in the original XBox was the licensing fees and that's only $10-$20 per console for them.

This isn't to say they wont do this but large hard drive and ram have always been cheap but you don't see them in consoles specifically because of what I've sited above.

In 2004 when they developing the 360, RAM prices were very high. If you remember this was shortly after Taiwan ram factories were damaged and memory prices were significantly increasing for the first time in a decade. The consumer price for 1 gig of DDR 1 ram was over $250

Regardless they are always always tight with components because the smallest saving is huge for them across millions of consoles - plus developers can do a lot with a little. Look at what the PS3 and 360 do with 512mb of ram - for both textures and game, it's fucking amazing.
