EVE Online introducing paid 'vanity' items

Complimenting the new "walking in stations" feature of EVE's Incarna update, developer CCP plans to start selling cosmetic-only "vanity" items in the spaceships MMO for players, their private quarters and vessels--for real money.

EVE Online players will soon be able to step out of their spaceships, at last, and onto stations with the 'Incarna' update. In the wake of that, developer CCP Games has announced plans to sell cosmetic "vanity" items for real money in the pew-pew spaceships MMO.

Pretty items such as "clothes and accessories for your character, custom paint jobs or logo placement on your ships or a fishtank/stripper pole for your Captain's Quarters," or the fancy techno-monocle above, will be purchasable for real cash money.

A new virtual currency, Aurum, is being created for players to buy the vanity items. You'll be able to get your hands on Aurum by buying and "breaking up" an EVE 'PLEX' time card--which can be bought with real money or EVE's own in-game currency, ISK.

You won't necessarily need to cough up real money for vanity items, mind, because they will be saleable on the open market like any other EVE item. As ISK can be used to buy PLEX, to break up into Aurum, to get vanity items, at a certain price-point it will theoretically become profitable for players to buy and resell hats.

The first phase of the Incarna update, single-player Captain's Quarters, is scheduled to launch on June 21. Here's a peek at what that'll bring:

Another game falls to the mighty hat backed currency school of thought.

Everything in eve can be bought with ISK, and since ISK can be bought with real money, I dont see how these new items are any different from any other stuff that people buy.

        So nothing has changed really.

Getting worked up about hats for cash is rather pointless. It's probably the best thing that could happen once microtransactions became reality.

you'll be able to buy them with isk from people reselling, so oh well. i'm going to lol when a hat costs more then a spaceship, however.

Supposed to be able to exchange isk for aurum or in the very least isk for plex then aurum. The main thing is it seems like they're trying to pull a lot of isk and plex out of the game economy.

except that when you lose the ship, you lose the paint as well

In proper EVE fashion they should sell a laser that can remove that paint from enemy ships.

This is a misleading blurb since these 'vanity' items can be bought with the in-game currency.

my understanding is this: the purchases from NPC's for the items can only be made with aurum. once they're bought, the player can turn around and resell the item for isk to other players.

and plex can only be brought into the game through real money purchases, which can then be sold for isk or aurum.

it wasn't misleading, just a little confusing to those that have no idea WTF about eve.

You can buy PLEX with ISK, in game. Then, in game, you can turn that PLEX into Aurum, from what I've read. You can do it all with ISK, I do believe!

You can buy PLEX with ISK, as I did say, but clearly that's not what CCP has in mind--they're pushing the real cash money angle. And they are adding a way to pay for these items essentially directly with real cash money.

I suspect the vanity items will be priced high enough to make the ISK approach more trouble than its worth for players who don't rake in large amounts of space-dough.
