February NPD: Black Ops sets sales record

The NPD Group released its video game industry data for February 2011 last night, and this month's sales push Call of Duty: Black Ops into record territory.

The market research firm NPD Group released its retail-only video game industry data for February 2011 last night. Call of Duty: Black Ops took the top spot yet again, making it the top-selling game in history at 13.7 million units in the U.S. alone (via IndustryGamers). Marvel vs. Capcom 3 took second place, followed by the strangely ubiquitous Just Dance 2.

Also notably, Dead Space 2 hung onto a decent slot, while newcomers Bulletstorm and Killzone 3 made respectable debuts considering they were launched late in the reporting cycle.

Nintendo's response revealed that 454,000 Wii consoles were sold in February, and that Just Dance 2 had sold over 554,000 units -- meaning Black Ops and MvC3 both sold more than that number. Otherwise, the company is celebrating Wii crossing the 35 million mark.

Meanwhile, the market showed signs of growth. New physical sales were up 4%, and the console market was up 12% in dollar sales. It was also the best February on record for accessory sales, which includes points cards. Portable software, however, took a dip as releases slow in preparation for the impending launch of the Nintendo 3DS and Sony's NGP.

making it the top-selling game in history at 13.7 million units
Where do they get their numbers because I don't think CoDblops has sold that many or is the top selling game of all time.

        13.7 is US only numbers.

SMB 3 sold over 18 million copies and it came out on 1 system. Hell SMB has over 40 million if you count the bundles with NES attached. CoDblops is the best selling video game in history if the only game sold in history was CODblops.

they might just be referring to the rate of sales

Then they would use the qualifier "fastest" not "top". Top selling means the most selling, as in, you know, the top.

you can see there it's actually called the "best-selling game in history" which could refer to rate rather than absolute numbers

                    Direct quote from that article.
"Call of Duty: Black Ops was the best-selling game in February, retaining the top selling spot since launch in November. It has now become the best-selling game in history, topping Wii Play."
                    They are wrong and/or lying.

According to the wikipedia page, Wii Play was the best-selling non-bundled game, and it's conceivable that CODBLOPS topped that worldwide.

They're only talking about US sales. NPD only tracks US sales.

So they mean the best selling game in the US? Is it that much harder to add an adjective to prevent saying something that is false?

Glad Dead Space 2 is doing well. I didn't think it was too great, but it was pretty polished and well made.
