If you’re planning on being the best explorer around, though, then you’re going to need to know how to upgrade your starship. How to upgrade your ship in No Man’s Sky Beyond

Upgrading your ship is all about having access to new technology. Of course, no matter how much technology you throw at your ship, there’s also going to be the concern of what type of ship you’re looking for and even what Class the ship is. All of this can be a bit confusing at first but don’t worry, we’ll break down all the info you need to know to help you stay ahead of the game.

Starship types and classes

Before we dive too deeply into upgrading your ship, though, it’s important to know all about the various types of starships available in No Man’s Sky. As it currently stands, there are five types of starships that can be found or acquired throughout your journey. These categories include the following types:

  • Shuttle – Low but balanced bonuses.
  • Fighter – High bonus for damage.
  • Explorer – High bonus for Hyperdrive.
  • Hauler – High bonus for Shields.
  • Exotic – High but balanced bonuses and stats.

As you can see, each type of starship has a distinct purpose in No Man’s Sky, making it important to find one that fits your playstyle. You can dive a bit deeper into the big differences between the types of starships by heading over to the community gamepedia page, where the community has done a great job of breaking everything down. We won’t go too in-depth with all that information here, as this article is based mostly around upgrading your ship, not the differences between each type.

How to upgrade your ship's inventory in No Man's Sky
You'll need to purchase a new ship type or class to increase your starship's available inventory space.

There are more than just starship types to worry about, though. Players will also need to be aware of and understand the differences between the four classes of ships: C, B, A, and S. Each class represents a significant increase in bonuses and inventory space, so it is important to be aware of their meaning. Here’s a bit more about each ship class:

  • C-class ships come with the lowest amount of inventory spaces and feature a low bonus, usually below 20%.
  • B-class ships offer the second-lowest amount of inventory space, as well as offer a 20% or higher class bonus.
  • A-class starships can have the maximum number of ship slots, with a possibility of being one below max. These ships also feature a 35% or higher class bonus.
  • S-class ships always have the highest available amount of inventory space in a starship, and also include a 50% or higher class bonus, excluding Exotic type ships.

Upgrading your ship

Now that you know a bit more about ship types and the available classes and their bonuses, let’s talk a little about actually upgrading your ship. While inventory size is all based around the class and type of the ship, you can purchase various Technology Modules, which when installed, will increase the basic stats and available tech of your starship. There are four primary types of Technology Modules which you can install in your starship. This tech includes:

  • Health Technology Modules
  • Hyperdrive Technology Modules
  • Scan Technology Modules
  • Weapons Technology Modules

Each type of module brings various bonuses and additions to your ships core systems and will allow you to increase your Hyperdrive range, weapons capability, scan range, and health restoration options. You can find these various Technology Modules while exploring the world in No Man’s Sky, as well as by purchasing them from the Tech vendors located in space stations and on The Anomaly.

Install new Technology Modules in your ship
You can install new Technology Modules in your starship after you find or purchase them.

While you can install just about any Technology Module into a starship, it’s highly recommended that you install modules in your starship that will help boost its basic stats, which will help to highlight your ship’s strengths. Because of the limited types of ships, it’s also suggested that players look into purchasing various types of ships as they come across them in the world. You’ll need plenty of money for this, though, so be sure to check out our guide on how to make money quickly in No Man’s Sky. At the end of the day, you sometimes won’t have a choice but to purchase a newer, better ship from the AI that you come across, so be on the lookout for higher class ships as you explore new systems.
