Weekend Console Download Deals for July 12: Retro madness

It's a celebration of retro games and games inspired by the old school generation in this weekend's console deals, led by The Messenger.

Stranger Things, among other things, has proven that there's a certain affinity for what's old school and retro. And that's the big theme for this week's console deals. Retro is everywhere and all three console makers are celebrating old school games or games based off old school ideas in one form or another.

Let's start with PlayStation, which is celebrating its big Retro Sale. That means a lot of great compilations and PS1 and PS2 classics are on sale across every great PlayStation platform. The folks at Xbox are focusing more on the retro platformer, celebrating games like Shovel Knight and Guacamelee 2 that honor the platformers that came before them. And lastly, there's Nintendo, discounting some of the great indie games that utilize the best in retro mechanics. That's all led by The Messenger, which just released its first DLC pack earlier in the week.
