Borderlands 3 will have a ping system like Apex Legends

Borderlands 3 players will be able to communicate via ping, similar to the system seen in Respawn's Apex Legends.

One aspect of Apex Legends that players are especially appreciative of is the game's ping system. It's a way to let those who prefer not to play with a mic use signals to quickly and effectively communicate enemy positions, items of interest, and more.

Gearbox has confirmed that Borderlands 3 will have a similar system that lets players communicate points of interest by highlighting them in the game world and via the minimal as well. There's a quick clip you can view to see it all in action.

This is all in a bid by Gearbox to help give players a bigger variety of accessibility options as well as ways to communicate with each other and make things simpler to coordinate. That's in addition to rich presence Discord integration and new matchmaking options like asynchronous matchmaking and Free-for-all Dueling that lets you take part in 1v1v1v1 multiplayer battles.

Previously, Shacknews' Ozzie Mejia went hands-on with the game. Here's what he thought about his time with it:

"Borderlands combat feels as smooth as ever, with heavy firepower, crisp firing rates, and low recoil across most of the weapons I used. This is where my own personal hangup with the Borderlands series started to surface and that's that sometimes there are too many guns, as it becomes hard to determine which is most effective, most powerful, or even which is the coolest. For the purposes of this demo, I largely stuck with a rare Tediore SMG, which not only delivered fire damage, but any discarded clips would become their own turrets. Yes, it's guns on top of guns. But even if you're the type to use just one or two weapons, there's more ways to use them than ever. Nearly every gun in Borderlands 3 now has an alt-fire, giving every weapon greater versatility."

You can catch Borderlands 3 when it hits Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on September 13.

Shacknews chat user Dave-A had a thought about this mechanic. Here is is:

"I’m surprised they never added a ping mechanic to Destiny 2. To this day, other players try to draw attention to objects of interest or activities by shooting at seemingly nothing, or at other players to get their attention.”

“Seems like to would be especially useful to help newer players with strike or public event mechanics.”, he added.

Is this not a function in pubg and other games? I never played the PC version, but on PUBGM you can put your crosshair on anything and ping it to leave a dorito mark for your team to see. It will also audibly call out what the item is if you have tagged loot.

“Interesting!” Dave-A replied. “I think the best you can do in Destiny is use an emote, which is too subtle to be useful.”

I agree D2 could use a better method. Especially since it seems to be growing in popularity with other titles.
