Summer Games Done Quick 2019: Day 5 schedule

Summer Games Done Quick is over halfway through the week, raising money for Doctors Without Borders. Shacknews is here with today's schedule and runs to check out.

25

It's that time of year for speedrunning to take over the Twitch community. Summer Games Done Quick is past its halfway point, almost through another seven days of epic speedruns. The top runners in the world are continuing their quest to run through the best games of the past and present, all while raising money for charity.

Summer Games Done Quick comes to you from Bloomington, MN. This year's event will raise money for Doctors Without Borders. So far, the runners have raised over $725,000 for charity and there are still three days remaining. Shacknews is here with a handful of noteworthy runs from throughout the week that should not be missed, but first, here's a highlight from Day 4.

Here's the full schedule for Day 5, taken from the Games Done Quick website, along with a handful of noteworthy runs to check out:

Kingdom Hearts 3

8:53AM - Kingdom Hearts III

Kingdom Hearts III has only been out for about six months and while Games Done Quick has given it a practice run during the GDQ Hotfix weekly streams, this marks its official debut on the Games Done Quick stage proper. It's a lengthy game, which is to be expected given that it pretty much ties up every existing KH plotline. That's why it's going to take three runners tagging in and out to wrap this one up in a little over three and a half hours.

And if you're unfamiliar with Kingdom Hearts games at GDQ events, there's plenty of downtime during the Gummi Ship flights and various unskippable cutscenes. So to help fill the time, Games Done Quick is taking donations for Disney karaoke. "Let It Go" is currently in the lead, but it's being trailed closely by "I Can Go the Distance." Give the latter a vote, because that Michael Bolton track is a wonderful little piece.

1:13PM - The Mario ROMhack block

You might have heard that Super Mario Maker 2 is out tomorrow. That means it's obviously missed its Games Done Quick window. So while the Mario speedrunning community is in the limbo period between two Mario Maker games, what are they to do in the meantime? The answer is a slew of Mario ROMhacks.

It'll start with a Blind Relay Race for the Super Mario World hack and will go all the way through Grand Poo World 2, the hack created by the one and only GrandPOObear. The Mario Maker runners have personality for days, so expect this to be one of the most entertaining blocks of the week.

(POObear's title card from his February video was too good not to use here.)

9:39PM - Super Mario Galaxy 2

Speaking of Super Mario Maker 2, if you're not among those picking it up at midnight tomrrow night, you'll probably need a Mario fix of some sort. Fortunately, GDQ has scheduled a Super Mario Galaxy 2 run to end Thursday evening.

There's also a donation incentive in place for the 242nd Star, which has gone down as one of the most difficult objectives in the core Mario series. If you want to see this made easy, be sure to donate now. Give SuperViperT302 a chance to show everyone how it's done.

Summer Games Done Quick 2019 will take place from now through Saturday, June 29. For more, check out the Games Done Quick website and be sure to watch all of the action from Twitch.

But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

They are just super slow getting things to YouTube. That’s something they really need to work on. Heck The Late Show will start getting things up 15 minutes after it aired. I don’t need it that fast but it’s really disappointing when 24, 48+ hours go by and nothing. It certainly doesn’t take that long unless I’m really missing something.

I'm not entirely sure how the process works, but I think they only restart the stream once a day, and they can't split it up and upload it to YouTube until that particular stream has been ended. That said, it is still taking them about a day after that to split the stream split up and uploaded.

You realize the late show isn't broadcast live, right? And they have a team of people whose full time job is just that kind of editing and production.

            • reply
              June 27, 2019 3:28 PM

Yeah that’s still uploaded within five hours. I mostly was pointing out that they take on average over 24 hours sometimes 48 hours to get things to YouTube which is insanely long. They’d be better off broadcasting to both twitch and YouTube simultaneously if that made it easier.

I do not understand their schedule at all. This was schedule for 3:50 something earlier today, and ended up starting almost an hour before that. Wtf?

        • reply
          June 27, 2019 12:22 PM

You need to refreshing the schedule after each game. KH3 ended about 1/2 hour under estimate, so everything gets moved up.

Just seems bizarre to me that the schedule times mean nothing. The blind race is basically all I wanted to see today and I missed the first 15 minutes thanks to the drastic schedule change.

Oh, Apparently a runner got banned, and so his run got removed from the schedule. I'm not sure when that run was supposed to be, but that could help explain the time difference.

I'm not sure of the circumstance, but apparently the runner for Spongebob: Battle for Bikini Bottom have been harassed by some people online. He sent a message back to the people harassing him, and the harassers submitted that message to GDQ as proof of the runner breaking community guidelines, resulting in him being banner. However, It seems the runner previously informed GDQ about being harassed, and is confused as to why they would ban him based upon one report.

Huh weird, I don’t really know where he was on the schedule, but I checked right when the previous game was starting and it still showed a 3:50 or so start time for the blind race and that was next.

As I said, the schedule is tentative, and things move around if runs end early or late.

I did go back one more capture of the page and see that SS:BfBB was scheduled for Saturday early morning:
                      Saturday, June 29th

A time change of 50 minutes early is pretty ridiculous though. I tuned in 30 minutes before it was supposed to start and found myself 15 minutes late.

I don't think there's been a harder level made since then. 3D World's final star was tough, Odyssey's last moon was pretty easy by comparison, but Galaxy 2's last star is no joke. That's brutal.
