Players who download the PC version of The Sims 4 for free on Origin can keep the base game.

Since its initial release in September 2014, The Sims 4 has proved to have excellent staying power due to its constant updates. Now, nearly five years after it came out, players can try the base game of The Sims 4 for free by downloading it from Origin Access on PC. Those that claim their copy before the offer ends on May 28 can keep it forever.

To claim a free copy of The Sims 4, players only need to launch Origin Access and browse to the store. The Sims 4 will be the top banner with a handy little “Get It Now” button.  Once claimed, it’s yours to keep.

The catch with The Sims 4 is that the game is merely a shell of its true potential when only looking at the base version. Over its nearly five-year run, The Sims 4 has added six expansion packs, seven game packs, and 14 stuff packs (such as furniture and clothing). Most of this isn’t free. To own everything offered in The Sims 4 with all its DLC, one would have to drop several hundred dollars.

The base game will be more than enough for players to tell if they want to dig deeper and potentially open their wallets, or if the game simply isn’t for them. While the Get to Work expansion pack alone changes how people play the game, the minute by minute mechanics will be largely the same. If The Sims 4 base game doesn’t leave players wanting more, it’s just not for them.

The timing of this offer also has me thinking about whether it might be time for another new Sims game. It’s been nearly five years and E3 2019 is just around the corner, which is prime time for announcements of new games. Although EA won’t be at E3 in the traditional sense, I wouldn’t be surprised if this offer is a sign that we could be seeing The Sims 5 announced soon. Pure speculation on my part, but I wouldn’t be shocked.
