The latest show is slated for today, May 15, and there's one very big game that will be shown off: Super Mario Maker 2. Nintendo Direct Super Mario Maker 2 live stream

The latest May 15, 2019 Nintendo Direct live streaming event is once again being hosted over on the official Nintendo YouTube channel. Given the wonders of the internet, however, we can save users a few clicks. Gamers can check the latest news and get a more in-depth look at Super Mario Maker 2 in the video embed below.

It should go without saying that Super Mario Maker 2 is one of the most frequently requested games among Nintendo Switch owners. The Wii U original was a fantastic way for players to get their platforming kicks as well as create and share interesting (and often brutally challenging) custom levels.

Given that for all intents and purposes, the Switch is basically an upgraded Wii U, many fans were hoping that Nintendo would port the game over to its newer hardware. Turns out the developers had a better idea: Just make another one. Building on the format from the previous release is a bit of a no-brainer, but we do expect that Nintendo will have made a few tweaks and changes to better suit the title to the Switch hardware.

Also forgot to mention vertical levels (with scrolling if desired) although it appears vertical specific levels will need to be after a door/pipe.

Also, 3D World has access to warp blocks, they function much like pipes although they can be one way and drop you in the middle of a room or whatever.

Don't see a page yet to confirm but yeah, I'm sure it will be games to redeem on your account only.

I would have thought that give the SMM2 co-op and mp options that deal for a giftable copy of SMM2 would make sense too.

        Here's the details page
        https://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/special-offers/

Currently only 26 games qualify BUT you don't have to use the voucher immediately, just within the year.

So if you buy SMM2 now and wait for ....say.... Pokemon or Animal Crossing ...(presuming they will be part of this deal...)

          May 15, 2019 4:02 PM

The fact that they expire is a huge deal breaker. I would rather them limit the amount of times you can purchase a voucher per year.

But still no way to string multiple levels together? That's one thing the first game really needed.

I don't quite get the appeal of the 3D World Maker when there's no 3D movement

      • reply
        May 15, 2019 3:50 PM

Adding 3D movement would be like going from editing Doom levels to editing Quake levels, it would be a lot of complexity that I don’t think would fit in an intuitive interface.

          May 15, 2019 3:54 PM

I get that, I just don't see the appeal of restricting all the 3D World stuff to a 2D plane like that.

It feels kind of unnecessary.. if they were going to do a completely separate mode where a lot of the stuff doesn't carry over, they should have done a SMB2 USA creator

          • reply
            May 15, 2019 4:03 PM

The 3D stuff in SMM2 should be read as 2.5D for all purposes. It makes watching the background layers a bit more important than in 2D mario games since obstacles can be along the z-axis (in-out of the screen).

            • reply
              May 15, 2019 4:09 PM

It's still extremely limited by comparison. Climbing the walls in the cat suit for example is really no different than the fences in the actual SMW. Actually, there's probably more "depth" to SMW there since you can flip around to the other side. The obstacles sure, but it still doesn't seem interesting enough to devote a whole mode to.

Super Mario Bros. 2 would round out the whole 2D Mario Maker package a lot better imo. I loved that game.

          May 15, 2019 4:38 PM

It'd need to be it's own mode like 3D World. The mechanics are just different enough, and there's virtually no commonality in the enemies or blocks.

The creator itself looks great, lots of additions and improvements but the sharing stuff seems mostly the same?

And I feel like everyone was wanting or expecting a basic overworld feature or ability to daisy chain a bunch of levels together to share 'worlds', but it looks like a single level only share system again.

That is why it's not in there. Letting people build full games could de-valuate future products, and sales of classic games.

No it couldn't, that's crazy talk.

The number of people who would say "Well I can play these cool Mario levels in Mario Maker 2, might as well skip the new Mario game" is so small as to not be worth thinking about. You gotta remember that most game sales come from people who would never even realize that's a thing.

3d world stuff looks great but i suspect will be less balanced and more "niche" i.e., lots of fun but not as refined for pure skill-based courses.

the amount of shit they added is crazy! and co-op looks great! co-op level making!

I've got an idea for a series of levels where W1 is 3D World, W2 is NSMB, W3 is SMW, etc all the way down. It inherently gets harder as your power up and mobility options shrink.
