The world got the first meaningful look at what the team at Gearbox has been working on for the last several years during the company’s presentation at PAX East 2019 today. Gearbox head honcho Randy Pitchford took the stage to applause and opened his presentation by reassuring series fans that Borderlands 3 will not be a battle royale game.

Gamers have been joking about the possibility of most new game reveals showcasing battle royale gameplay for most of the last year. As the game type has grown to take over large portions of the shooter market, many studios and publishers have attempted to attach themselves to the hype train that was started by PUBG and Fortnite.

Long-running franchises such as Call of Duty and Battlefield made a big fuss about including battle royale modes in their most recent releases, so fans began to not-so-seriously wonder if the long-awaited Borderlands 3 would try jumping into the genre.

Borderlands has a long history of being a loot shooter going back to its original release more than a decade ago. Prior to the popularity of Destiny and Tom Clancy’s The Division, Borderlands was the king of Diablo-esque first person shooters. The variety of loot types and weapons has become a franchise staple and fans should expect the next evolution of that design with Borderlands 3.
