Back 4 Blood is the next game by Left 4 Dead dev Turtle Rock

Turtle Rock, the studio behind Left 4 Dead, is moving forward with original IP Back 4 Blood, which will evolve the co-op zombie shooter experience and feature PvP.

One of the originators of the co-op survival shooter genre is stepping back into the zombie-infested battlefield with a brand new game. Turtle Rock Studios, the studio behind the critically-acclaimed and often-copied Left 4 Dead, is partnering up with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for Back 4 Blood.

Back 4 Blood is described as an "original, premium title" and "premium, AAA title," which could mean this won't be a free-to-play experience. The team hasn't locked down a price point yet, but it will be launching on PC, Xbox One, and PS4. In the FAQ for Back 4 Blood, the team states that "more possibilities aren't out of the question though."

“It’s hard to overstate what an awesome opportunity this is. We get to return to a genre that was born in our studio with over ten years of additional experience and zombie ideas racked up in our brains,” said Chris Ashton, Co-founder and Design Director, Turtle Rock Studios, in the press release on the Turtle Rock website. “We also have some of the best teammates in the business at WBIE who understand our development process and are equally committed to our player-first mentality. We love being able to announce, so we can start working with the community right away.”

In response to the question of if Back 4 Blood should be seen as Left 4 Dead 3, the answer is no. It's a brand new, original IP with zombie shooting similar to L4D but with features and mechanics that make it unique. For one, Back 4 Blood will feature PvP gameplay in addition to the co-operative campaign.

“We are not resting on any past laurels. Our goal is to take all we’ve learned and push forward. We know that’s a tall order,” said Phil Robb, Co-founder and Creative Director, Turtle Rock Studios. “We’re growing the team considerably because we’re stepping up to the biggest challenge in this studio’s history. We know this title has to stand out and we fully intend to make that happen.”

Back 4 Blood is still in early development, so there's no official release date or release window for it as of yet. Stay tuned to Shacknews for additional gaming and tech updates.

It's too bad. That game had a lot of potential and was a lot of fun for a while. It was just too easy to grok and lock-in a meta and evidently too difficult to keep balance and keep players engaged, I think.

Flawed gameplay premise in many ways, but better than people give it credit for.

Kind of sick of Zombies. Wish they were making the theme different at least. Aliens and laser guns would have been cool :/

Same. But if you look at the situation from Turtle Rock’s perspective, the last non-zombie shooter they took a chance on bombed.

I’m not saying the lack of zombies hurt the game, only that I get why they’d want to try a proven formula rather than create the same type of game but with ninjas or lasers or bunnies or whatever.

Basically zero information of any kind, but tentatively excited for a spiritual successor to L4D. There's so much more that could have been done with that franchise. I don't think I've played a zombie game in years aside from RE2.
