YouTube Gaming app shutting down, folding into main site

The web video giant has announced plans to shutter its dedicated gaming application and move its most popular features into the core YouTube experience.

YouTube Gaming first appeared on the scene back in 2015 in an attempt to cash in on the skyrocketing popularity of Twitch.tv. After Amazon acquired the streaming giant in 2014, Youtube scrambled to offer a competing service and leverage their position as the world’s most popular video sharing site as a way to break into video gaming streaming.

The dedicated YouTube Gaming app failed to find a larger audience, despite its abundance of features that were superior to Twitch. Today, YouTube announced that the YouTube Gaming app will be shut down in March 2019.

Many of the most popular features of the YouTube Gaming app will be integrated into the core app and website. As written in the company’s blog post on the matter, you can find all these gaming-centric features at youtube.com/gaming.
