Top 10 Fishing Minigames

You may have played these game for other reasons, but you stay with them for the dank fishing minigames.

5

In the history of video game side activities, fishing may be one of the most beloved. From Ocarina of Time to Far Cry 5, part-time angling has been a staple of the video game world for longer than many of our readers have been alive. On this episode of the Shacknews Top 10, Greg Burke the video jerk takes us down memory lane to get a glance of the best fishing minigames of all time.

Were your fishing favorites well-represented in this list? Did we miss some standout minigames when we cast our nets? Should Greg be forced to sleep with the fishes? Let us know in the Chatty comments.

If you have a suggestion for a future episode of Shack's Top 10, please let us know in the comments section or tweet @shacknews@GregBurke85 with #Top10.

I read this as "Top 10 Finishing Moves" for some reason....and thought that would make a great article too. I still think that Fatality in MK4 where you rip the dudes leg off and beat him with it in an endless loop until the screen fades out is still the best. Opinions?

Neither idea has anything on Top 10 Fisting Minigames.

All of them would probably be from WarioWare.

I'm actually surprised that isn't already a MK fatality.

LotRO fishing has Trophy Fish you can take to a Taxidermist to mount on the walls of Housing, and also Food Fish a Cook can use in fortifying or healing recipes (also old boots or skulls). But I guess choosing two Zelda games works.

Kinda felt like this list was more "Top Ten Memorable Games that Also Have a Fishing Minigame".

To me, a good fishing minigame has gameplay, skill, and as little amount of chance as possible. I like a fishing minigame where you can explicitly see what fish are dwelling around in the fishing spot and where you have to have the right lure/bait and careful "dance" with your lure to attract the fish. So the best on this list, following that criteria, would probably be Breath of Fire 3. In that game, you can see a shadow of a fish, you customize your equipment before casting off, and the act of catching a fish seems like a test of skill.

Even the Zelda GB game fits that criteria more than some of your list entries here.

I think WoW and Torchlight 2 are bad fishing minigames because they're basically skinner boxes. Do this thing, a dice gets rolled, and what you got is based on that dice roll. I'm not sure I would even call Stardew Valley's fishing game good, but it's at least more engaging than those other two.

I mostly agree with this. I'm not sure that more complicated/involved is always best for a minigame, but "click->wait->click again->catch fish" is pretty pathetic. WoW and Torchlight 2 have shitty fishing minigames.

I kind of like Nier: Automata for fishing..
