"We're always challenging ourselves to try something that we've never done before," an Insomniac Games developer states in the new dev spotlight released today. Not much is known for now, but Insomniac Games teased a new virtual reality title in a developer spotlight chronicling the team's recent history.
While it seems like the new title will challenge the team with new ideas, some of the game will be influenced by the games in the team's recent history. The game is going to be on the Oculus Rift and a reveal will happen next week, June 7, 2018, but there are some additional things that can be discerned from the video below.
Throughout the spotlight, various members of the Insomniac Games team reflect on the innovation and experiences achieved in games like the modern remake of Ratchet & Clank, Sunset Overdrive, Edge of Nowhere, and The Unspoken. If one were to draw conclusions as to what this next game will offer beyond what was explicitly said about it, here's a bullet point of focuses from the games discussed prior to the tease in the Insomniac Games developer spotlight:
- "Weapons that push the envelope"
- "Interesting movement"
- "Spaces that really compel people to explore" (Ratchet & Clank)
- A playground to move around at breakneck speeds (Sunset Overdrive)
- VR traversal "in a way that couldn't be done before" (Edge of Nowhere)
- Shift to a first-person scheme, the full body movement tracking for opponents (Unspoken)
- Community outreach will be a strong focal point
"In this new project, you'll be able to go wherever you want," one dev says in the video. Others add that "we're gonna see a potential for movement and exploration that breaks out of the 2D plane" and "fans can expect a lot of things Insomniac Games is known for: Crafting good stories, good controls, and a little bit of humor...maybe some tears."
The new VR game is teased with the tagline "Reclaim Your World" which could mean so many different things. With the bits of information gathered above, hit the Chatty and let us know what you think may be in store for us.
"For a very, very long time, we've wanted to make a game that was about establishing a sense of wonder," the team says. "Create really immersive and beautiful spaces and apply it to a new pallet of open-world adventure. To be able to bring that into the VR space is definitely the next evolution that we're going for."
Look for the official reveal next week on June 7 and stay tuned to Shacknews for more updates.
