HTC Will Formally Introduce New Standalone VR Headset This Month

The company will bring their next VR wave to the Vive Developer Conference.

Facebook introduced their standalone VR flagship HMD when announcing the Oculus Go early last month. Now, reports say that HTC will be formally introducing their own standalone VR headset at the company's Vive Developer Conference in Beijing on November 14.

Chinese publication Yivian reported on the news, citing promotional material and an inside source that verify the existence of a Snapdragon 835 powered VR headset with inside-out tracking. The headset will utilize Viveport as its official content platform and, like the Oculus Go, will float in that sweet spot of affordability and capability between tethered and mobile VR HMDs. HTC registered a trademark for "Vive M" in China but there's no confirmation that this is the name of the new head-mounted display.

The headset was originally revealed to be in development during Google I/O this year as part of a line of standalone Google Daydream VR HMDs and a program was introduced allowing developers to register to create content for the headset. 

The VR front line consisted of the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, PS VR, Google Cardboard, and Samsung Gear VR with the Daydream View joining the team a bit later. Now, we're on the verge of an entirely new wave of VR HMDs like Microsoft's Mixed Reality offerings. More options mean more consumer power and, hopefully, more growth within the VR industry.
