The title comes from a new team made up of former Avalanche Studios developers.

Slightly hidden among all the major announcements coming out of Gamescom 2017 is an entirely new game and IP from publisher THQ Nordic, dubbed Biomutant. It is described as an action RPG set in an "imaginative post-apocalyptic universe" populated by “mechs, paragliders, balloons, mounts, jet skis and more”. It is under development at Experiment 101, a new development studio comprised of former Avalanche Studios veterans responsible for titles like Mad Max and the Just Cause series.

Biomutant is centered around heavily-customizable characters that allow players to use mutations, bionic prosthetics, and weapons to build their own machines of destruction. The post-apocalyptic landscape will be traversable in many ways, including the aforementioned gliders, balloons, and jet skis. The game’s combat is said to be heavily influenced by martial arts.

A reveal trailer accompanied the announcement at Gamescom. In it, a bionic raccoon-looking thing attempts to engage in battle with a giant ogre-type creature. Several weapon types are shown off in the pre-rendered trailer and the visual aesthetic is very colorful.

Biomutant is expected to release in 2018 for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Players wanting a closer look at the title can check it out at the THQ Nordic booth at Gamescom.
