I understand your reasoning but would still have liked to hear it asked. Maybe he'd have surprised us.

Christ what defines a sequel? Were you disappointed when super Mario bros 2 was pretty similar to the first?

That's a very bad example because Super Mario Bros. 2 was very different than Super Mario Bros. because it was originally a vertically scrolling cooperative action game that was retrofitted into a Super Mario game because the original Japanese release was thought to have been too unoriginal (i.e. it was just more Super Mario Bros. levels with higher difficulty so they said fuck it and made a new one).

Still holds, 3 was very different from 2 since it was kind of one off. I find that Nintendo in general is very good with preserving the heart of a franchise while innovating with many aspects of their games. Anyone can sit down and play a Mario game and instantly feel that it's familiar, but when you stop and analyze just what has changed, it's typically quite considerable.

And OG Mario Bros was even more different.

The example totally works if you remember that NA SMB2 (SM USA) was a baby mode game for babies created since JPN SMB2 (The Lost Levels) was considered too difficult for the NA audience.

So we're in agreement that the original version of SMB2 was pretty similar to SMB1 which was Redwall's argument to begin with. They then re-skinned a different game to create the international version of SMB2 which is what chilln was whining about to begin with.

No, we aren't. I linked it because it was clear you didn't read my post and now I don't think you even read chiilln's post or Redwall45's either.

No one reasonably believes that SMB2 refers to the Japanese only edition. Redwall45 was clearly talking about SMB2 and not The Lost Levels, especially considering he follows up to say his comparison was from SMB2 to SMB3. chilln's post does not discuss SMB2 at all.

I can believe everything this guy says except for "great story". I bet it will still be dumb and boring.
