Crysis 2 multiplayer demo now available on PC
The PC version of the Crysis 2 demo is available for download from Shacknews...
PC gamers looking to get a taste of the upcoming FPS Crysis 2 can now download the game's previously announced multiplayer demo. The demo can be grabbed from Shacknews right now.
Players can square off in six vs. six matches on two New York City-based maps. The first map, Skyline, pits players against each other on the rooftops and interiors of destroyed Manhattan skyscrappers while the second map, Pier 17, throws players in an open environment as they battle between limited cover.
The demo has two modes, a team deathmatch variant dubbed Team Instant Action and a control point gametype called Crash Site.
Though some sharp-eyed Shackers found the demo earlier tonight, the demo is now available for all to enjoy. Crysis 2 arrives on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 on March 22.

I was pretty meh on the 360 demo when it came out and was really hoping the PC version would be better, but I'm still pretty unimpressed overall. The gameplay isn't bad by any means, it just feels completely unoriginal imho.
Good
-The graphics. While not a huge jump from the original Crysis, the lighting and the texture work both look noticeably better. Water still has a bit of a plastic sheen to it, though.
-The guns feel like they actually have some weight behind them. When you fire off one of the (somewhat limited) guns available in the demo it actually feels like they pack a punch. The sound is well done and they pretty much all handle how you would expect a gun of that class to handle.
-The unlock system is pretty well done, and you have a decent amount of options to customize your player. Still kinda burned out on the whole multiplayer unlocks thing, though.
The Bad
-The menus. From the "Press Start" button on the startup screen to the nausea-inducing tilting menus, the menus are god awful.
-Graphics settings don't let you tweak *anything*. You choose from "Gamer", "Advanced", and "Harcore". That's it. You don't even get to see what settings changes these options make. How can you release a PC demo with such limited options for video settings?

Well, not at all surprisingly, the mandatory account creation screen does not work - it sits there 'creating' endlessly.
That, and it starts up in 800x600 resolution, despite my desktop being 1920x1200. This is Crysis, for fucks sake. Oh, and unskippable EA logos, as per usual.
I wonder if the game is any good. I WOULDN'T KNOW.-

Same for me, after a lot of retries I finally got it to create the account through the website but have so far failed to get it to activate.
Really, for a release this big you'd think they would at least invest in some server infrastructure - that, and pay an intern $5 to write some code to lookup the desktop resolution when starting the game for the first time.

My initial impression after playing for 15 minutes or so. The FOV is, yep, consoled. Mouse movement feels, weird, like not snappy enough at all, and not fully due to mousespeed. There sure is a lot of HUD stuff and symbols and markers. The maps look really cluttered, and I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not. I'm all for a nice looking map, but when you can't tell wtf is going on clearly because shit looks cluttered... Did I mention the FOV feels horrible? In game voices of your teammates sounds goofy. Unskippable kill cam. I hate that. Graphics are nice, runs smooth for me at least. Man, that FOV is giving me a headache, did I mention that?

is anyone really surprised? PC shooters are dead and buried, the only people that can make money off that segment is Valve - it's difficult to say if it's because they properly support the platform or they properly support the platform because it still makes them money. either way, the end result is the same.

I'm having fun!
but i never played any of the call of duties in multiplayer except maybe twice for 10 minutes.
this seems very similar but the cloak/armor/acrobat suit is awesome and it's a lot of fun running fast/jumping up buildings, then switching to stealth to look for enemy, going to armor and killing him, very satisfying :)))

Why do companies release demos without all the bells and whistles?
"Hey here's a DEMONSTRATION of our game so you'll buy it. But please don't use it to judge the game since we left out awesome features"
I'm not saying they need to have half the maps of the real game and all the weapons, but if your selling point is awesome graphics and you put out a demo without the awesome graphics then why bother?
(having said that I don't know what this demo is doing as I haven't downloaded it yet)

Anyone find a config or a way to enable the console? I really need to tweak this FOV.
The game looks and runs great at native res on the gamer setting. A bit surprising, actually. Funny how blops still runs like total ass on the same system.
Also, what's up with "power" not being a skill selection, but rather something that's on temporarily with certain actions (jumping / sprinting). I can't power punch / throw people anymore? They streamlined maximum speed away by combining it with strength, but also made the combined action is not an ability toggle like they used to be and like cloak / armor still is? Weird.
Also, prone is gone :O - Not that I really used it a lot in Crysis, I probably used the leaning more (which is also gone).-
FOV fix via the command line option works, thankfully it's the same command as Crysis. Probably some other standard commands that will work via command line launching as well.
Add +cl_fov=90 (or whatever) to your shortcut. Here's a shot of a drastic 120 just so you can see that it does in fact work:
http://steamcommunity.com/id/pyide/screenshot/577790014994757440
I hope it's not something that will be patched out come release :/
Now to find a way to toggle aim, or it's back to good old glovepie for that.-
-
A good FOV is whatever you prefer. For me personally that means something not so low and zoomed in that I get motion sickness and nauseous after a few minutes of playing.
HL2 was 75 by default but adjustable via the console, I used around 100 with that game on my 16:10 display. Eventually with the Orange Box and further updates they put an FOV slider right into the video options, with a range of 75-90 in TF2, Portal, HL2 and Eps. L4D 1 & 2 are 90 by default for comparison.
Crysis 2 seems to calculate by horizontal FOV while the original Crysis & Warhead used vertical fov like Bad Company 2. Using a 90 FOV in those games is more like 120 in something else.-
-
You want a wider horizontal fov, yes. Certain games however calculate the overall fov in the engine by using the vertical value instead. I don't know why, more standard support for different ratios?
You can see what I mean here: http://www.rjdown.co.uk/projects/bfbc2/fovcalculator.php
It will spit out the FOV you should enter into the console and config original Crysis and BC2 for your preferred horizontal choice.
Crysis 2 doesn't appear to use this method is all I was saying. I didn't mean to add to the confusion!

One thing to note, when you sprint the camera zooms back to the default sprint fov. It's pretty funny seeing it go back and forth like that when using something higher. Here's a shot of 90 btw: http://cloud.steampowered.com/ugc/577790014994678090/871067C059BD474B22CFA0C236F87EF9A8ABF856/ -

A Crytek dev posted this on the Steam forums:
On the topic of "console ports", please note that this demo does not contain the full list of PC-specific features that will be in the retail version.

So there's some hint you'll be able to adjust more settings, but not really enough info there yet. -

Well, very consolly ("press start button"?!?) from the interface to the FOV, but on a pure visual level, wow, nice job Crytek. My card isn't brand new but this thing is the nicest looking/performing thing I've seen on my screen for a while. What's funny is, benchmarkers are probably STILL going to use Crysis one instead of 2!!!!

Alter FPS, FOV etc through command line:
http://www.fpsadmin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=97204&postcount=33 -
Liking the gameplay a lot. Played a few rounds with Crabs and pyide for a bit but then the friends list started removing friends... The server browser has everything you want in terms of filters I think. However, when I select restrict region to NA, I only get 12 servers returned. I've just been scrolling down to the 109ms servers (after all the 0ms DE/Amsterdam/etc ones) and selecting LA/CA/etc. Pings have been in the 20s for me in-game. No noticeable lag in my games so far.
Controls are tight, switching between suit modes is fluid if you set your binds up. Mouse buttons bound just fine. Bumped the graphics up to the best option and didn't really notice too much from 'Gamer'. Not sure if they disabled anything for this beta but it runs very nicely on my althon II x4/gtx 470. FOV doesn't bother me anymore really, but I can understand the complaint. -
Having finally played a bit of this, I'm disappointed.
It looks good, but not spectacular.
It plays like Call of Supersoldiers, except everyone seems to die easier than soldiers without exo-suits.
This is really, really disappointing. I hope the single player is good, cause that's all I really want it for anyway. -
-
-
-
Nope PC. FOV is fixed by this command line:
+g_skipIntro 1 +cl_fov 90 +r_DrawNearFoV 90 +pl_movement.power_sprint_targetFov 90 +r_motionblur 0 +sys_maxfps 125
I agree with the account issue being annoying though. Nonetheless, it's a lot more fun than first trying BLOPS with the nanosuit adding a huge new and cool dimension. Relative to BFBC2 - they're complements not substitutes. -

CounterStrike Source is the only deathmatch game I can play for hours on end. A few quick rounds of Halo or Call of Duty with friends is about all I can take before I get bored of that mindless, run and gun, shoot everything that moves, meat grinder experience. I much prefer the Battlefield series or ArmA II.

Well, apart from the technical issues this game is fun. The server browser is a complete piece of trash, the lack of control options for things like toggle crouch and toggle aim (unless you're in the middle of a match) sucks and will hopefully change in the full version, but the game runs well, looks great, and is fun to play.

So drop it down to something that looks good to you. The correct fov is entirely subjective and a personal preference. If you go above a certain point, the view is going to stop zooming out and will start fishbowling the screen to fit more from the periphery into the view.
I personally don't mind a little warping around the edges, but that's because most of the time I'm focused on the center of the screen anyway and I'm used to a little bit in any game that allows a custom fov.
Try something between 75-90!

Guys I'm having trouble and I can't play the demo. Ok so I got past the tutorial video and I'm at the menu screen but instead of giving me a list of useful config options like I'm used to, it's telling me to "PRESS START TO BEGIN". Now, I've looked all over my keyboard but I can't find the Start key. HELP!!!
