Evening Reading

Footage allegedly from a pirated version of Crysis 2 made its way around the Net over the weekend. Such material puts news sites in a difficult position. In the modern era, once something like that hits the Net, it's out there, impossible to contain. But it's also content maliciously taken from its owners. This isn't a situation like say a whistleblower coming to the press. It's pirates, ripping off the game. Yes, we cover piracy in the video game industry but basing coverage on pirated material is a whole other matter. We can't stick our heads in the sand and pretend it's not out there, but neither can we in good conscience knowingly use pirated material for a story.

In their response, Crysis 2 publisher Electronic Arts said "Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22. ... Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community." Should the game's PC sales fail to meet expectations, it's a safe bet there will be plenty of fingers pointed back to this moment.

There was plenty of other video game news today and here are the top stories from the Shack:

Lost tried to get crazy metaphysical and do something no other show did, and I respect it for that. I also just found it damn entertaining, but I don't tend to watch TV shows with the hyper-critical eye that a lot of Shackers do.

I actually think avoiding plainly answering alot of the longstanding questions was a tactful move. It allows everyone to personalize some points for themselves. A long-arcing story like Lost is open to interpretation anyways. Even if we were provided "all" the answers by the proverbial powers-that-be, it would ultimately only be one interpretation of events.

True, but it also was a slap for people who thought the Lost writers actually had it figured out. They did some really cryptic crazy shit early on. Lots of weird internet games and a lot of neat references. People were hoping they were smart enough to have a big reveal that would show their genius. It didn't happen.

Although it was obvious from the path the last half the series took. They abandoned dharma initiative as one of the shows big mysteries and went more towards spirituality. Dharma was more or less DOA from then on. Which should be a blatant warning of the spiritual easy button that's coming.

I'm not really sure how they "abandoned Dharma". Season 5 gave their entire operation and purpose a pretty satisfying explanation.

Lost didn't have an ending though. They ended Season 6 the whole flash sideways thing but they didn't actually explain any of the big mysteries introduced in Seasons 1-5.

            • reply
              February 14, 2011 5:14 PM

The mysteries weren't the point of the show. The point of the show was the relationship between the characters, and the mysteries are what brought them together so those relationships could play out.

I know a lot of fans, and even non-fans, wanted the crazier, sci-fi stuff to be done more. I totally get that. But the irrefutable fact is that the show had much better ratings every time there was a character drama on display. Ultimately, this is the reason the show went in that direction.

I think that's a bit of a cop-out on the part of the writers. They clearly had no idea where they were going with the show. I think why so many people were upset is that they essentially spent 5 season teasing that you were going to get some explanation to what actually was going on.

That said, I actually still kind of liked how they wrapped things up.

I understand this argument, really I do, but... how is chalking it up to parallel universes more justifiable a scenario than a religious experience?

In the end, they are two completely different approaches which attempt to provide a somewhat meaningful answer to two completely divergent beliefs (science and god).

Who knows why they went with god as an explanation, other than possibly trying to satisfy a broader percentage of their assumed audience.

Hurley becomes the new island protector and takes Ben as his right-hand man. An unidentified period of time later when they all have lived out their lives and die, they are reunited in the afterlife

They explained the food drops in the Prologue on the bluray release. Essentially, the people sending the stuff worked for Dharma, who obviously knew where the island was since they were the ones who found it. They had no idea of what happened on the island recently, or at least were told to keep shipping stuff anyway. Ben found them and told them they were relieved of their duties, as it was no longer necessary.
