Cocktail Fridays: Sazerac

Cocktail Fridays: Sazerac

This cocktail was born in New Orleans during the 19th century and follows the classic cocktail definition of spirit, sugar, water, and bitters.

Recipe

  • 1/2 oz Simple Syrup
  • 3 Dashes Peychaud bitters
  • Absinthe (a small amount to wash a glass)
  • Lemon Peel
  • 2 oz Rye Whiskey (I prefer Sazerac Rye but any spicy Rye Whiskey will be good)
  1. Freeze an old fashioned glass or fill it with ice and water to chill
  2. In a mixing glass, add ice, bitters, simple syrup, whiskey, and stir (do not shake) until chilled and diluted
  3. To your chilled old fashioned glass, add a small amount of Absinthe to coat and pour any excess out
  4. Pour cocktail into Absinthe washed glass and express oils from lemon peel, discard peel

This is the perfect libation to sip on while investigating voodoo murders and roaming the streets of New Orleans in Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers.

Seems a good enough reason to post Chris McMillian's video on the topic:

Also I love the Gabriel Knight call back.

I really hope that his Revel Café & Bar survives this pandemic. Really want to go there as soon as it's safe. Originally was planning to visit NOLA next October but... I don't want to get my hopes up.

And with the shared connection of New Orleans' Best Cocktails being a thing for NOLA.com and the newspaper featured in Gabriel Knight, this is a good reminder to pour one out for The Times Picayune.

In 2019 it was purchased by and "merged" with The Advocate, but they fired the entire Picayune staff, all 161 of them, and kept only the paper's name and domain.

I'm really not a fan of the erosion of local news sources, it sucks every time one shutters. :(

I know we've discussed my visit with Chris, his family, and some locals at Revel while I was in town. I hope they're going to pull through and you get to visit next October! I got the Sazerac glass at The Roosevelt Hotel Sazerac Bar and I would recommend a frozen Irish coffee from Erin Rose (sans coffee grounds on top) and Vieux Carré at the Carousel Bar. Such a great city, can't wait to go back.

I think I vaguely remember that conversation, haha. And yeah, NOLA is an lovely city that I'd really love to spend more time exploring, especially considering what a whirlwind ShackCon was.

For sure gonna get another frozen irish coffee from Erin Rose. Probably won't be the same since last time it was in the heat of June and so felt almost life saving while we waited "in line" for brunch.

And I know I at least tried a Vieux Carré, not sure I got one for myself though. I think it was Zero|DPX who shared with me? For sure gonna need a reminder on how those taste.

Speaking of liquors, I picked up cachaça.

      Time for Caipirinhas.

I had a bartender fix me a cocktail at a speakeasy style bar in Denver. He first ran me through a series of questions to determine what I would like. Girded with that knowledge, he fixed me a penicillin, and it was delicious.

Sounds great. I'd go with Rittenhouse, I think. Spicy and plenty hot. I will need to pick up some Absinth to try this out. Also, whatever anyone recommends, I cut the simple syrup in half.

Tonight I had an Old Fashioned with a drop of Lemon Oil.

Love this Cortex, keep up coming every weekend!

Nice. Make sure you wash the glass with absinthe, it seems like a small detail but it ends up being an integral component.

We did that walking tour in New Orleans where they take you to all the historic bars and you get each of these famous drinks. The Sazerac was one of my favorites.

I fucking love a good Sazerac. I don't have all the ingredients to make one at home but I'm inching towards setting up my bar so I can make them. Such a great drink. I love spirit-forward stirred cocktails.
