Are you interested in trying out Star Citizen? The game is celebrating its 8th anniversary starting today, and lasting until December 2nd.  During this time, you can create an account and download the game for free. You will have a basic starter ship to fly around and check out the game with.  I suggest, however, that you start on the planet Microtech in the city New Babbage, as the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo (IAE) 2950 show is occurring there.  At the show each day the ships from a different manufacturer will be featured, allowing you to rent the ships for free and try them out for 48 hours. This will let you access most of the ships currently in the game and use them for trading, mining, combat, or use them to complete any of the missions currently in the game.

Play Star Citizen for FREE

To get started, go to https://robertsspaceindustries.com/star-citizen/play-now to create an account and activate the Free Fly code. You can use my referral code ( STAR-VDDS-QXSW ), which will give you an extra 5,000 UEC (in game currency).  Then just follow the steps to download and install the game (the game is a bit over 50GB).

Once you have installed the game, logged in, and launched the game, click on the Persistent Universe button. On the next screen, select Stanton System -> New Babbage, and then click the Visit Location button.  From there, you will likely be asked to create a face for your character. Once you complete that, you will load into the game, and be laying in a bed.  Press ‘y’ to get up, then use WASD to walk around.  To open doors or elevators or interact with items, get close to them, then hold ‘f’ and use your mouse to click on the menus that pop up over interactable items. There is a full keyboard control layout for on foot and piloting a ship in the options menu. For additional help with the game, you can see the information at: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/playstarcitizen

Attending the IAE 2950 Show

If you have spawned in New Babbage, or have flown there, head to the city trams which you can access from any of the locations in New Babbage, such as the hotel or spaceport. You should see black and yellow signs in the tram stations showing you the way to the show. Once you arrive, leave the tram station and enter the show lobby. The back of the lobby has a bank of elevators that will take you to the two main expo halls where ships will be shown off. You can rent a ship by walking up to it, interacting with it and selecting the rent option.  Once you have rented a ship, you can go to the spaceport using the city trams, and use the vehicle retrieval screens there to have the ship delivered to a pad or hanger for you.

            you wuss!
nah that mightve been the smart thing, I do remember needing to login to monitor my credit card statement pretty religiously during that time to make sure cancelled deals were actually cancelled. but all in all that one site did come through with the goods so for a poor college student the risk paid off.

I tried to play earlier this week and couldn't figure out how to get my ship. The little terminal near the docking bays didn't show anything. Guess I'll give it another go.

Right by the elevators to the pads and hangers should be screens that say 'vehical retreval'. Interact with them to request your ship.

ya I clicked that and it was just a blank yellow screen. No matter which console I went to. Must have just been a bug. I relaunched the game but didn't feel like riding the trams and elevators again lol.

Yeah definitely a bug, should normally have a list of your available ships.

If anyone is interested, a bunch of us will be playing tonight starting at 9 PM EST / 6 PM PST. We will be on discord, in the ShackFleet channel. We can help out any new players with the game.

Also, is the Nomad not rentable? It's on display at the show, but I didn't see a rent option. I was able to open the door, but I 30k'd when I tried to board it.

I guess I'm an idiot. I don't see how to get to the Free Fly option? 😐 I've made an account (used your code 😀), but RSI wants me to give them my CC info when choosing a starter pack.

I'm not entirely sure, as when I go to the Fly Now page, because I have an account and ship, I'm not seeing what you are seeing.

Reading the FAQ that I linked at the bottom of the article again, you may have to wait until 2 PM PST / 5 PM EST for the free fly for new players to start.

I'm sure we will be on for a bit every day for the next two weeks, but not as many people at one time. We can probably get a few big ships fully crewed and complete a few missions.

It might depend on your resolution. I have a 1070 TI and it runs fine, but I'm using a resolution of 1600 x 900.

Hmm I'll download it again and try a lower resolution. I can't remember what I ran it at last time, it was quite a while ago

I feel like the real culprit is RAM. Having only 16 seems to cause a lot of stuttering. I can run the game decently on my 3770 / 1080 but you can really feel the need for more RAM.
