Review: Buying a 4090

If you're thinking about buying a 4090, read this first!

CrustaR

If you want to buy a 4090, this review is for you. Now before I get started, I just want to give a shout-out to my sponsors dognose and shirif. They know about games that 0wn.

Once you start looking into buying the 4090, you have several different websites you can choose from - NewEgg, Amazon, Best Buy, and NVidia. Just kidding, NVidia's website just linked to all the others.

I first tried the Best Buy (BBY) website since that was the official drop point for NVidia and had the super cool looking founder's edition card. I was dead set on the FE card, but that was a mistake. As soon as Best Buy added inventory to the site (5 mins before the official drop time), botters and scalpers snatched them up by using a special link. I kept refreshing the site like an idiot after the official drop thinking BBY was late putting them up. Nope, BBY was sold out. While I was refreshing, all the other cards dropped on the other sites and sold out fairly quickly.

Look how cool this is. Too bad you can't get one.
Look how cool this is. Too bad you can't get one.

I was half looking at NewEgg's site and almost bought the watercooled version of the card which was like 300 buhks more (should have done that), but no, I was dead set on the FE card thinking it would drop later (plus, it looks super cool).

The one I should have bought.

In any case, everything sold out by the time I found out that the FE card was sold out already. Then I was browsing Reddit and found out you have to append something to the end of the link so that you get automatically put in the queue. I tried that for a bit with an auto-refresh script, got added to the queue as Best Buy added more cards in besides the FE edition, but by the time the site verified me, the card was sold out.

I got real close once and got all the way to checkout with one card. Unfortunately, Best Buy thought I was picking up the card instead of having it shipped and wouldn't let me check out since it didn't think the card was available locally. I had to watch the timer with my reserved card count down from 10 minutes, and there wasn't A FEEKIN THING I could do about it.

Then I used my auto-refresh script on NewEgg thinking maybe they would restock eventually, and they banned my IP. Amazon didn't really have anything, it was all gone by the time I looked. All. Gone.

Long review short, buying a 4090 really, really sucks. If you really want to buy one, set aside your whole day and prepare for getting nothing!

Can't you buy a 3010 and a 1080 and duct tape them together?

If you need to game at 4k with RTX sure, or just bragging rights, my 3080ti is going to last me years

I bought a 3090 only 3 months into the pandemic (for MSRP basically), i've played 3 games since that time: Rocket league, Vampire Hunters, Monster Train.

I had originally wanted it for cyberpunk but after the disaster of launch and mediocre response I never even bothered to play it.

I think im going to pass on the 4000 series and maybe get a 5000 series when I get a new computer in a few years

Scalpers probably bought 90% of the supply again. Sorry duder. Your 3090 is perfectly fine for now anyways. Wait for the 3090Ti next spring :)

It's almost like these retailers weren't interested in fixing "the problem"

They weren’t. It seems only EVGA even tried.

They don't care.. they are getting their money either way. Hell even Newegg allows the 3rd party scalpers to list on their storefront. I saw it a few hours after they went on sale 3rd party listings for 4090's sitting between $2200-2500.

I was lucky to get mine on launch day, but honestly it was shit show getting one.

Newegg.ca accepted my order, then said OOS and cancelled it. Then it became available at 300$+ more, but that was then OOS, and the two SKUs just kept going in and out of stock without ever making it to a secure checkout.

Bestbuy.ca had a bug where you could click the yellow add to cart button before the screen refreshed entirely, so I had a 4090 TUF in my cart at one point, but it said it doesn't ship to my province, so fuck that.

Finally, while Computers Canada didn't ever show any 4090 TUFs in stock, they did list the Gigabyte 4090 which is what I ended up purchasing with same day in-store pickup.
