Starbound is leaving Steam Early Access on July 22nd and will be available for PC, Mac and Linux too! Chucklefish, developer of the game, made the announcement on their official dev blog this morning:

"After ~5 years, the game we set out to make finally exists, and to say that it all feels a bit surreal would be a massive understatement!

While Starbound will be finished in two weeks, this isn’t the end. We will continue to update and support Starbound for as long as we can. We’ve got loads of cool ideas we couldn’t fit into 1.0 but hope to put into future updates.

Thanks again for all your support over the years! You’ve stuck with us, and it means so much.

Look out for more info over the next couple of weeks!

Congratulations to the entire team at Chucklefish! We look forward to getting our hands on the final version in a couple of weeks.

You can find out more about the game and add it your wishlist on Steam.

Looking forward to this, I put the game in my backlog shortly after the first beta and have been waiting for 1.0 ever since. Sounds like they've added a ton of stuff since then and completely revamped the progression.

Finally, fuck. I just really only wanted to play story mode since I backed it 4 years ago.

Games actually come out of early access?

        The good ones do.

People are used to seeing games pop up at E3 or get an announcement with release date, and then see that game come out later that year or the following year (for most.)

Early Access lets you follow development, so it really shouldn't be surprising that there's a game in your library going through EA that stays in it for years. Games don't happen overnight.

I'm debating whether to start playing again now or wait. I wish I knew how different 1.0 will be from the current Steam build.

I remember running a mini Shack server for this and hacking through logs with Python so that you could access a webpage and see who was logged in and what quadrant they were on.

Must have been at least 3 years ago?
