Sonic Team is working on a new Sonic game

You were expecting... what, exactly?

In a news announcement absolutely perfect for the week after E3, Sonic Team director Takashi Iizuka confirmed that he and his crew are developing a brand new Sonic the Hedgehog title in celebration of the character's 25th anniversary. Not that they needed much of an excuse. Sonic Team is the name of the game.

"We at Sonic Team are developing a completely new game, as well as developing a full movie actively done by Sony Pictures, and animation on Sonic Boom," Iizuka told fansite Soah City (via GameSpot). "The most important thing is not the fact that the series survived for 25 years, but how many games [were] developed. Our goal [is to] add something new and overcome any potential hardships."

Given that 2016 marks an important milestone for the character, it seems likely that Iizuka and his staff are working on an anniversary-themed game. Their project could also be a tie-in to the movie in production by Sony Pictures.

Ya. Nothing even remotely decent since the Dreamcast, and even that is debatable.

Not true. Sonic Generations was amazing. Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World were also good.

I'm want to see what it looks like before I get even a little excited. It's so annoying being a Sonic fan nowadays, because he has been so up-and-down recently. They're last anniversary game, Sonic Generations, was amazing, so here's to hoping that this one is, too.

      but why

Because a developer named "Sonic Team" can't very well go and create a space-combat sim. That's probably the only reason at this point.

They need to play Freedom Planet and then take some time to consider their design choices.
