Shack Reels: Shack's Arcade Corner: Battletoads

God, I love being a toad!

The release of Rare Replay introduced a whole new generation to how brutally difficult Battletoads was for the NES. The compilation also included the Battletoads Arcade Game, which some may not have been able to play back in the early 90s.

For this week’s Shack’s Arcade Corner, Greg takes a look at the arcade version of Battletoads, which may or may not have been entirely based on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Did anyone enjoy Battletoads arcade as much as the original NES game?

I never saw the arcade game in person. It's a hell of a lot easier than its NES counterpart.

Actually, I didn't know Battletoads was a coin-op game. That got me thinking about console games ported from coin-op games I never knew existed. Take Double Dragon, for instance. As a kid, I never saw it in arcades. Not once. To me, DD was an NES game. Final Fight, Goldenaxe, Magic Sword, TMNT and TMNT: Turtles in Time -- I played those and other beat-em-ups in arcades, and was familiar with them as such when I finally got to play them at home. But there were some that either never showed up in the handful or so of arcades I frequented, or if they were there, I totally missed them.

They were playing this in my office recently, definitely looked better than the console versions I was familiar with

Nice, never played the cabinet only played it in MAME it is pretty rad. Am a huge Final Fight and Streets Of Rage fan and dig beat em ups. Man did RARE back in the day really know how to make nice graphics.

Cool vid Greg as always, thanks. First time I don't know what game is next? I want to say MERCS but its not...

The next one is a great one. Definitely one of my favorite older arcades. It would get pretty brutal real fast.
