How to Farm Exotic Engrams with the Three of Coins in Destiny The Taken King

Getting Exotics used to be hard. Now it’s easier than ever with Xur’s newest item, the Three of Coins.

Getting Exotic Weapons and Armor used to take forever in Destiny, but now with the Xur’s most recent inventory update in The Taken King, things are much easier than they once were. This guide will show you how to farm Exotic Engrams the fastest and easiest way possible in Destiny’s The Taken King.

Filling your backpack with Exotics isn’t as hard as it once was. Now all you need to do is pick up one item from Xur, and then head out into the game world and kill an Ultra. For those who aren’t completely familiar with Ultras, they are uniquely named enemies with Yellow Health Bars and Skulls beside their name.

In order to fill your pockets with Exotics you’re going to need to make sure you have plenty of Strange Coins lying around. 5 Three of Coins costs 7 Strange Coins. Once you have plenty, head on over to Xur and pick up as many of the Three of Coins items as you can. Once you’ve stocked up on those bad boys head back into orbit and launch into the mission “Scourge of Winter” on Venus. We also recommend popping an Ether Seed at the start here to help you farm some glimmer during your upcoming venture into the Ember Caves.

Fight your way to the Ketch, and once you reach the door leading into the boss’s lair, open your inventory and pop a Three of Coins.
Now head inside, bring down the boss’s health until he’s almost dead, then run forward and shoot him with a rocket, killing him and yourself. Make sure you don’t shoot any of the other yellows in the room, as it has been known to cancel out the Three of Coins buff.

Rinse and repeat this until you run out of Three of Coins, and then take tally of your Exotic inventory. We managed to nag about 4 Exotic Engrams out of 20 Three of Coins during our testing, but you could come out better depending on your luck with the game’s RNG.

What's the advantage of killing yourself as well as the boss? Does the mission not end and force you to kill him again or something?

Exactly because you died it respawns you at the last checkpoint but any loot that drops stays on the ground until you pick it up.

That feels like something that will be patched out, especially with Three of Coins.

Any old yellow dude won't work. Has to be an Ultra, not a Major. Strike bosses (except for the flayers) and some story bosses (like Draksis) are Ultras and can drop exotic engrams when you use a Three of Coins.

        Fucking LOL

It actually is pretty fun. I just started playing it 2 days ago (it's been sitting around for months b/c I got Bloodborne like a day later), and so far I'm enjoying it. The game world is WAY larger and more complex than I'd imagined, the gameplay is tight (if you liked combat in Halo, you'll like Destiny - it's like Halo combat evolved [see what I did there?]), the loot system is pretty satisfying, as is the upgrade system, and you're free to completely change the subclass and movement/grenade/melee abilities of your character at any time - once you've unlocked them, of course. Downsides are an menu/shop/npc interface that's really spartan (no pun intended) and odd for a console game, a story told mostly through dialog with your "ghost" (the little floaty star guys that follow characters around), tiny little snippets of text in mission briefings, quest objective descriptions, and the (very) occasional cut-scene... oh, and mostly through Grimoire cards, which are like Appendix entries from Shadow of Mordor, only for some reason you CAN'T READ THE DAMN THINGS IN THE GAME, you're instead directed to read them on bungie.net after you unlock each one, at which point you might as well just go to http://destiny-grimoire.info/ and read them all without waiting for them to get unlocked in your account, not to mention skipping the interface on bungie.net, which is pretty, but is not optimized for quick navigation. I'm sorry, I'm ranting, but it's just sooooo dumb. So so dumb. Also matchmaking sucks. My first time in the Crucible (the PvP arena thing) I got matched up against several lvl 40 (the max) guys. Because I got the booster item from the new expansion pack I'd basically started at level 25, but I was still only 27 at the time. I proceeded to get absolutely BULLDOZED - several times I unloaded my full clip directly into one of those guys and it didn't even fully bring down his shield. The only way I got my single kill was to use my super power on one of the weaker players.

Three of Coins is too good. I'm surprised they put it in the game. I picked up four exotic weapons, two chest pieces, a helm, and gloves today with this.

I feel stupid for wasting so many coins on the helmet engram initially. I wanted the good titan helm (never got it) and got several repeats before giving up. All those coins could have given me more rolls from a completely new loot table!
