Tonight at Sony's E3 press conference, the company started off its presentation with the return of the long-dormant game The Last Guardian.

A lengthy PlayStation 4 gameplay demo showed the protagonist navigating through a rickety, fragile wooden structure with his oversized creature companion, making a leap of faith to escape a falling structure and landing on the creature's tail. The beast itself was in danger shortly after, though, and the two just barely escaped yet another falling platform.

It was given a release window of 2016.

I hate to sound ungrateful because they just gave me literally the only thing I asked of them, but should it really look like they haven't touched it at all since the PS3 reveal?

I doubt that game would have ran on a ps3 as plan so this might make sense. Also they might just trying to finish it up and shove it out the door Duke nukem Forever style so they can move on.

It probably would have, but it would have run like Shadow of the Colossus on the PS2.

It's more that in 8 years, I'd think it would look a little more polished. It's one thing to have an art style that's consistent with the other games in the series. But there's rough edges that could be smoothed out, here. The way the feathers all clip through each other and the static volumetric fog could have been addressed. The animation isn't as impressive as it used to be, it still looks distinctly early last-gen.

If all the time since the announcement has been in building the world, then this game is going to have to be massive. But if the only restriction to releasing it was that they couldn't optimize it enough to get a good framerate on the PS3, then this would have been a PS4 launch title.

the original reveal was probably pre-rendered bullshot stuff, and there are improvements from that regardless (the feathers, lighting, etc)

I just went back and re-watched the old one and I feel like it must have been bullshot because it looked better in all those areas to me.

This confirms to me that the studio that they brought on to complete the game is largely there to fix technical problems. Which is fantastic. The core gameplay and vision behind the game must have been nailed down.

I really thought it was canceled. Good on Sony for leading off with that.

I'm still not a fan of the monster's design. Looks like a cat, which is probably the least fantastical animal you could use.

I feel like it should be sleeping on my couch and annoying me for food.

Scaffolding destruction is hot this year. Uncharted 4 is setting the trend.
