Elite: Dangerous Coming to Xbox One this Summer

The galaxy will soon see a whole new set of explorers when Elite: Dangerous releases for the Xbox One console.

Frontier Developments announced in a forum post that it will debut the space exploration and combat game Elite: Dangerous on the Xbox One later this year. The developer knows the Xbox One hardware well, thanks to other games like Screamride and Zoo Tycoon.

Frontier is also quick to add that the Xbox One release won't be a "dumbed down" version of the game. Console players will have all the same features PC gamers enjoy. The announcement also goes on to reassure fans that the console release will not diminish the developer's dedication to supporting the PC release with fresh content and updates.

The most exciting, and surprising, part of the announcement is that Elite: Dangerous will support cross platform play between the Xbox One and the PC/Mac. "That means even more players contributing to the wars, power struggles and Community Goals across the galaxy." So, prepare for a lot of new pilots to enter the galaxy.

Who would want to play without a HOTAS?

I know plenty of people who play using a wired Xbox controller.

I would point out that true cross-platform play (i.e. encountering players from other platforms in space) is likely NOT in the offing. Braben's wording, to me at least, strongly implies that player actions within the "background simulation" of the universe (i.e. trading actions, missions completed for factions, community goals, etc.) will be unified across all platforms, but actual ship-to-ship interactions will not.

This is exactly how the "solo" mode and "private group" modes work in the PC version - if you're playing solo, your actions still get taken into account for all the background sim processing deciding what governments rise and fall, what commodities move where, and so on, but the players in the Open servers won't ever see you.
