PlayStation Mobile waives $99 license fee

Sony has waived the $99 licensing fee for PlayStation Mobile, at least during the summer, to attract more indie developers to the platform.

Sony is aiming to get more developers on its PlayStation Mobile platform, and as such has announced that it is waiving the $99 license fee. That means developers will be able to create a game for the PlayStation Mobile platforms, including the Vita, essentially for free.

The PlayStation Blog announced the move, and was frank about its intentions of getting more development on the platform. Earlier this year Sony started promoting a weekly free game for PlayStation Mobile, aiming to drive more players--which presumably, would then drive more developer interest as well.

You can register at the developer portal. The blog did mention this as an effort for this summer, which could mean the fee will return eventually.

It's limited exposure that keeps devs from the platform. I highly doubt the $99 fee deterred even a single developer that really would have published a decent game.

They need to fund some cool exclusive games for the platform, if they want to spark a little interest in it.

I think it prevented developers from taking a glance at it. It's more to prevent people from saying "hey I want to screw around with it, but I don't feel like paying $100 to do that". Then it drops off the radar because once an actual game gets developed, they skip a Vita version since they don't have any experience with it.

Never heard of it before.... I had just assumed Vita dev required a huge investment and contract.
