The Oculus Rift is no longer planning to ship with copies of Doom 3: BFG Edition. The VR device had originally planned to include the game so that developers could see it in action in dev kits, but an update has revealed that the game won't support it before launch, necessitating a change in plans.

The Kickstarter (via The Escapist) announced that instead of Doom, buyers can get $20 in Steam credit, $25 in Oculus Store credit, or even a full refund of the pledge. You can request your replacement in the order manager.

We came away impressed with the Doom 3 support. This announcement doesn't mean it isn't coming at all, just not for launch. Oculus promises "more great developer showcases" in the works, but has not mentioned which games might be getting support soon.

Carmack is too busy shooting things into space to work on silly games!

You know what? Let him concentrate on rocketry. Rage and Doom 3 BFG Edition clearly displayed Id Software's creative priorities post-2007.

Id has a chance to redeem themselves, but it will probably take years, with a few awkwardly silent QuakeCon keynote addresses to come.

Hey dude, first person VR space fighter controls are more important than shitty games! Carmack knows the zeta-reticulans are coming soon and we have to be able to mobilize fast strike fighters that can make it past the Van Allen belt. Do you want humanity to die?

Carmack and Luckey are having a little spat! Carmack is taking his toys and going home!

I doubt that. Here is my speculation carmack made Doom 3 BFG compatible with the Rift prototype which WOULD have worked on the dev kit if they hadn't changed screens. But since they couldn't source more than 5K of the 5" screens that idea went out the window and I assume carmack simply hasn't had time to update Doom3, but Oculus wanted to wait just in case he did have time before launch.
