Hyperviolence was all the rage at this year's E3. However, only one hyperviolent game could take the crown. The Game Critics Awards have finally been determined, and Naughty Dog has come on top with The Last of Us. Its strong performance pushed PS3 to the top of the heap, with PS3 as the most-winning platform. Sony Computer Entertainment is the most-winning publisher as well, with 7 awards.

Nominees for Game Critics Awards must be playable to E3 judges, comprised of representatives from a number of outlets (Shacknews included). However, the following "Special Commendation" awards can be given to games that weren't playable at the show.

  • Special Commendations for Graphics - Star Wars 1313 & Watch Dogs
  • Special Commendation for Sound - The Last of Us
  • Special Commendation for Innovation - Watch Dogs

Last year's winner was BioShock Infinite. With both Last of Us and BioShock Infinite releasing in 2013, it'll be interesting to see which (if either) "Best of E3" winner can steal Game of the Year.

Yeah, no dice. Watch Dogs blew everything that was shown out of the water, without a doubt.

Was it playable for the judges?

Nope. That's why it was ineligible for any of the main category awards.

I'm not sure what was cool about Watch Dogs. Graphically it looked hot.

But the gameplay? I feel like the GTA IV guys could script that in a weekend.

Wasn't last year's BS:I presentation at E3 stage-only? I know they did have in-game with the blimp attack and such, but I don't recall it being played by attendees.

However, I felt this years E3 no-shows and little guys carried more power than the staged events: Dishonored, CoH2, ARMA3, Guild Wars 2, and Planetside 2.

BS:I? It has to be playable by judges, not attendees to be considered afaik.

When the last if us was first announced I was hoping it would be more of a survival horror than an action adventure game so I was disappointed with what I saw at E3. That said my topg games of E3 were Pikmin 3, The Last of Us, Halo 4 and Watch Dogs, Beyond isn't for me just like Heavy Rain.

I think it's going to end up being a good mix. I'm sure they wanted to show off the more action oriented stuff in the E3 presentation however the health-bar, health that doesn't regen and limited ammo points toward some major survival horror type stuff as well.

I think South Park winning best RPG is quite indicative of the lack of RPGs at E3 this year. Not that it doesn't look any good. I'm personally quite intrigued... great timing I guess...
