Konami has officially announced Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Update: Now includes additional details from Konami.

Mirror of Fate isn't the only Castlevania game coming from Konami. In fact, it's not the only Lords of Shadow game. Konami has officially announced Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 for PS3 and Xbox 360. Developed by MercurySteam, the debut trailer paints a game that looks more like The Lord of the Rings than any Castlevania game before it.

Konami called Lords of the Shadow 2 "the shocking conclusion" to the story. In the sequel, "Dracula returns once again, weakened and yearning for release from his immortal bonds. Facing a new and powerful threat, the vampire lord must reacquire his old powers, and only his castle holds the key."

"Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is the most successful Castlevania game to be released in the franchise's history," producer Dave Cox said in a press release. "We are looking to provide series fans yet another nail biter, complete with Dracula's resurrection and the Belmont clan's desire for his final destruction."

If that is the case; O Lordy, I want this game so bad now. I've been wanting to see Alucard again since the PS1 days. Along with everybody else, I'm sure.

He made an appearance in Dawn of Sorrow on the DS. Was even playable in the unlockable Julius mode.

I'd prefer to see him in a Castlevania game, not in a generic brawler.

If they are doing a full console sequel, why even bother with the 3DS game that's similar? Make it a classic style sidescroller :(

It's going to be 2.5D graphics, 2d gameplay a la Order of Ecclesia. Sounds good to me. (3ds version)

            Nintendo power leak....

some grainy screenshots as well. It looks like the camera will tilt to give the illusion of limited 3d space, but the gamely looks to be more classic 2d in nature. I am trying to find the article I read that divulged further and flat out said it is styled in the classic gameplay, but I swear I read it. May have been removed since I read it.

I hope you are right, because the details here definitely does not sound like the classic style castlevanias, plus it's being developed by mercurysteam same as the lords of shadows games, not konami proper. It's not going to make me buy a system.

If you check out the shots, the enemies appear to still be in a perpendicular line ahead of Trevor. In the swinging shot? He is also swinging along what appears to be a perpendicular line, albeit with the camera at an angle. I bet we'll see more soon. I really liked LoS, so I don't mind that being the universe or graphical style it's set in. In fact, I look forward to the re-imagining of characters and monsters from the past. I loved the Iga style, but I don't know if I would have been excited by an umpteenth game with the same sprites and anime art on top.

I'm less concerned about the perspective and visuals than I am the feel and tightness of controls, combat, platforming, gameplay, etc. Something I've felt the 3D Castlevanias have never gotten right, and from the details it sounds like they are trying to translate that into a semi 2.5D game.

It'll be something I'll have to see in motion or play for myself to really see what it's about, but what little I know is less than exciting so far.

I'm probably alone with this but I'm getting some weird Metroid Other M vibes from this game.

I doubt it will be that bad, but it's a similar evolution. Classic 2D series that had some success in 3D, then tried to mix up the classic 2D formula with 3D character action and lost a lot of what made those classic games classics in the process.

Another site mentioned how there will be 2.5D stuff as well as 3D combat arenas like LoS and also Other M. Yuck :(

Metroid Other M almost worked. Not the plot or acting, of course, or the shoehorned-in first person segments, but a lot of the third person sections really did remind me of playing Metroid Fusion.

That said, what I really want to see is a 2D game with a fixed camera, hand-painted textures on 3D geometry and really excellent 2D animation. Can you imagine how gorgeous a good 2D Castlevania or Metroid could look on the 3DS?

In fact, I can only hope they talk about a new 3ds at e3, or I will be forced to by the current version when that game comes out.

oh snap. i am excited. i really liked the game..

i've been playing through darksiders, and while the most direct comparison i can draw to it is GoW + Zelda, i kept thinking about how awesome castlevania was (despite being different from it's predecessors).

That trailer was awesome but I'll be so disappointed if they don't follow through with the ending from the first one ><

That said, after a shaky beginning, C:LOS was one of my favourite games last year.

Agreed on both counts, but I also wouldn't mind them filling some gaps in between, there is lots of Drac time to account for. I loved the first one, but I would agree that it didn't really start getting great until well into the second chapter (10 or so levels in).

the main problem I had with LoS was that it was too long by several hours and it was too late in the game when you finally make it to a castle environment.

the difficulty was a little uneven, with early bosses being a chore and later bosses not being overly harsh at all. in fact i think the first LoS boss fight was the hardest for me.

the graphics were stunning with incredible art direction and pretty great animation. the writing was overwrought and patrick stewart clearly made the best he could of it, but the dialogue was pretty ridiculous. the conclusion was pretty great however, and especially the final cinematic. i will need to watch those DLCs on youtube to get caught up before playing LoS2.

Lords of Shadow is no Castlevania game, as I've said before. But it's an awesome fun action game in its own right and I look forward to this one.

I also believe this is the first numbered sequel since Castlevania 4 on the SuperNES.
