'Circle Pad Pro' confirmed as 3DS add-on name

Capcom's Tsukasa Takenaka has confirmed the name of the 3DS analog stick attachment as the Circle Pad Pro, claiming it's 'the right way to play' Resident Evil: Revelations.

The 3DS add-on that fits a second analog stick to the device is called the Circle Pad Pro, according to Capcom's Tsukasa Takenaka. This confirms speculation from an earlier report that caught the trademark filing and drew the obvious conclusion. In Japan it will be called the "slide pad expansion."

Speaking to Eurogamer, the Resident Evil: Revelations assistant producer said it was a "no brainer" to support the device once they learned about it. "When we decided that we thought, we have to do it fully, we have to create a whole other control scheme based just around this peripheral." The Circle Pad Pro layout is Type D, and you can select an option to calibrate the add-on.

Meanwhile, Joystiq reports that Capcom isn't planning a Circle Pad bundle for Revelations, so you'll need to buy it separately. And in case you were hesitant after the RE Mercenaries 3D kerfuffle, yes, you can delete your save data with ease.

Takenaka calls the Type D with Circle Pad "the right way to play" Revelations, which seems reasonable enough. On the other hand, the existence of the peripheral means a split userbase and the looming shadow of a possible hardware revision for the 3DS device. Given Nintendo's recent financial troubles due partly to poor 3DS reception, it's hard to tell if a move like this help or hurt the device.

They had better offer some sort of trade up program when the 3DSi comes out with the dual sticks built in. This is shameful.

So terrible. I'm not buying a 3DS until they either come out with a new revision or just drop this thing.

I traded my 3ds in at GameStop for iTunes gift cards. Bought over 80 great games. Pocket consoles are dead. Look at the Vita, the only reason it will be slightly more successful than 3ds is because it is including a lot of smartphone/tablet features.

And even it will fail when people can buy the same games on their droid or idevice for 1/4 the price, and not have to carry around two $300 devices with them.

No abomination. this was to answer the needs for certain games specifically the Monster Hunter Tri games which sell like hot cakes. That Nintendo should have made the device with a second controller I'll only say that hindsight is 20/20 and if they would have had a string of hits folks would have been busy playing and not looking at sales figures and dogging Nintendo and for what? For trying to entertain you? We cant all play Killzone portable and its not like these things sell like hot cakes, except Nintendo's portable because they understand this market.

There just up against the dollar, thumb gamers and against that super casual market there is just no real bouncing back from that.

I think Nintendo AND Sony and whoever else decides to enter this market will have to set their expectations lower because of this very real threat. Just a sign of the times.

They should have learned from Sony's fucking mistake with only putting one stick on the PSP.

Are they planning to have a revised version of the 3DS with one of these integrated into the unit? I thought I had heard something about that, but maybe not.

I will skip Frankenstick (trademark 8-4 Play) and just trade in my 3DS when they come out with the inevitable 3DS model with a built-in right stick and improved battery life. It will be the first time I have ever traded in a game or piece of hardware but I can't say I feel too bad about it.
