Morning Discussion

The warmup for Guy Fawkes Night tomorrow is well underway here in England, with fireworks being set off all through the day and night. Truly it is a magical time of the year.

Of course, these days we are not entirely sure what it's all about. We know Guy Fawkes attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament with King James I inside, we're comfortable with that, but we're a little hazy on whether the fireworks, toffee apples and jacket potatoes are celebrating the triumph of the Protestant monarchy or cheering ole Guido on for attempting to smash the state.

We do have some splendid bangs and sparkles, though.

Yeah, I got DA from Impulse and this fixed my DLC issues. One thing to note is that sometimes the service will die (I haven't figured out what tends to kill it), so if your DLC suddenly gets listed as unauthorized, make sure you don't need to restart it.

Thanks for the post. Got my DLC content working via this method. Figured it was on Bioware/EA's server end. Wouldn't have guessed the bloody game would need to hook in through a fucking service.

Don't move the file to the other location, just run that and point it at daupdatersvc.service.exe

It didn't work. The service never appeared in the MSC. Manual method took all of 1 minute. There are shortcuts in that process if you are pretty knowledgeable with Vista/7.

You have to run the cmd as administrator, or start a cmd as admin and run it from within that.

In fairness to Impulse, as I bought it from there too, this seems to be an issue on Bioware/EA's end due to the anti-piracy social networking registering site they're using. So clumsy. Gotta love anti-piracy solutions that punish honest customers. :(

Relax. Just pointing out what everyone is learning about this issue - it's EA-related not Impulse related. And as I also pointed out in my other thread, I love Steam too. So lighten up, Francis. ;)

It does at this point look to be an Impulse problem. Their installer doesn't properly register the daupdatersvc service. They must be faulted for that. However, they might not have been able to catch it since it's likely EA's content servers were not online when impulse was preparing and testing their distribution.

Still, I fault Impulse for several other areas on this release. No pre-loading. No midnight release. Late day release (10AM PST, 1PM EST) for a large download. If I didn't have the capacity to RDP into my gaming system, I wouldn't have been able to start the d/l until I got home from work. As it was, the game was STILL downloading when I got home from work.

I don't know if this is necessarily their fault or restrictions in their licensing and the Impulse software, but it is something they need to address, as I will remember getting home in the evening and not being able to jump right into a game I'd been waiting to play for years. This will most assuredly have an impact on where I choose to purchase AAA titles from in the future.

I didn't care about the lack of pre-loading simply because it downloaded insanely fast and that was immediately after it was available, too.

Had I bought this same game on STEAM, I'd have had to play it way later that evening, if at all, since their servers routinely become overloaded.

And Pancake Humper - I wish I worked there, believe me. Been outta work for a long time now. :(

I think you're kind of dancing around the problem here. Had you ordered on steam, you'd have likely had the game pre-loaded when it went live. It is truly good fortune that you were able to download the game so quickly when it went live at 10AM PST/1PM EST. Many are not as fortunate to be sitting in front of their home computer during normal business hours, nor can most people RDP into their system to initiate the download.

The only reason I ended up on Impulse was to take advantage of the 20% discount code. Otherwise, this would have been a steam purchase. So unless Impulse plans to make a 20% discount available prior to the launch of every AAA title, I see no reason to use it over Steam.

The benefit to Impulse is that you don't have to have it running to play games.

A valid point, but I run it through steam anyway to get the overlay. How else am I going to know when there is a Shackbattle or Remo is delving into Torchlight again?

Understandable. The thing that bugs me about Steam games is that they can be unavailable for play if my internet connection is down or if steam is down.

Yeah, they got me good! I shelled out $51 for the digital deluxe version, and it took all of a couple minutes to correct the error which I'm sure will be patched soon over Impulse. Not saying it's perfect, but the shenanigans last night with the Bioware Social site seemed far more detrimental to the game. I mean, due to Impulses mistake, I was denied the DLC that I couldn't get anyway due to EA/Bioware's mistake. Poor fool am I...

Because the game was 20% cheaper on Impulse thanks to a coupon.

I likely won't make that mistake again, although I've since gotten it to work, although I'm still having to use an altered .exe that bypasses the activation since EA/Impulse still haven't resolve the serial number issue.

I personally believe that it is a better platform than Steam for purchasing games. It seems most of the problems come from Bioware's social site/ ea's activation servers. The only confirmed issue on Impulses end is a install issue that prevents you from using the DLC which i am sure will be fixed rather quickly.
