        I'd start with System Shock 2, it's way shorter. And he'll probably want to replay Deus Ex again and again if he never played it before, so he will be stuck in an infinite loop.

    There are various texture and model upgrades, but honestly I prefer the game without any alterations.
    
    Hoard ammo, use a melee weapon when you can at first.

      and SS2 seems to be naturally unstable in XP/Vista anyway, to the mods may just break it more.

    There's a also a textures mod somewhere which is quite good. However, I don't recommend any mod adding new models instead of the old ones. It makes the characters looks cartoonish.

    Turn off or down the weapon degradation in the .cfg file. It's a bit crazy.

  System Shock 2's requirements:
  
  - Play in the dark.
  - Play with headphones.
  - Close the door.
  
  If unable to fill these conditions, save it for later and play Deus Ex.

  Tron 2.0 was so excellent. Like from start to finish, that game was pure gold.
  
  System Shock 2 is frustrating unless you're either playing co op or playing with a patch to disable one or two "features". Ultra fragile weapons AND endlessly respawning enemies do not go well together.
  
  Deus Ex was so great and anyone that hated the awesome freeform first level (at least three major, distinct paths through it!) can eat a cock. Melee and rifles all the way!

  Just turn down the weapon degradation somewhat. It's pretty ridiculous when your pistol can only fire 13 bullets from like 7/10 condition before it breaks.

        That's why I generally put it at like 33% of the original rate. You can actually use your gun, but it will break eventually.

      Do not playing Robinson's Requiem. Sweet mother of god, stay the fuck away from it.
      
      Unless you want to check out how awesome it is to tie tourniquets around your limbs, get drugged up high as a kite and then cut each one off in turn. That's a feature all games should implement.

  When you play Deus Ex, set the difficulty to maximum, it's not actually that bad, and it's way too easy otherwise.
