Morning Discussion: Singing in the Rain
Rather than gabber about video games, let's take this opportunity to remind our readers that Father's Day comes to much of the world this Sunday. Oh sure, it's an empty, meaningless holiday created by The Man for the purpose of selling Leatherman tools, classic car manuals and greetings cards bearing pictures of beer, but you do love your father, don't you? Only the most wretched and awful child would scorn Father's Day.

MMS just counts against your SMS plan. 1 MMS = 1 SMS

Yea, MMS will just count on your text plan. I think they are scared of all the extra data associated with the MMS messages and the huge number of iPhones out there. Just like with the tethering. They have allowed that on other smartphones for a long time already, but why they are dragging on this now doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

no, it's their system. everything is "features" on the account. with the iPhone, the feature "Restrict MMS" was added to all accounts, because the iPhone did not support it, now that it does, they have to basically go though everyone's account and get rid of the "Restrict MMS" feature on everyone's account. Its a retarded limitation with their system, and laughable really.

Not knowing the systems that they're working on but knowing how these things are generally set up makes me think that this makes no sense. *Manually* enabling MMS on a per user basis is a complete waste of manpower when you could pretty easily write a script to change that flag for every iPhone user without much effort, I would guess.
It's most likely network related -- either the iPhone is doing MMS via IP or something and they need to build out the service (which would not surprise me) or they are worried about the excess traffic that the phone would create. The excess bandwidth argument makes sense considering the fact that apparently iPhone users are raping bandwidth at every turn anyway

You don't has it?
http://gizmodo.com/5284779/iphone-os-30-now-available-in-torrent -
tip on checking for new version within Terminal:
Launch Terminal and type in the following every few minutes to see whether 3.0 has launched, rather than repeatedly clicking the Check for Upgrade button in iTunes (note that the up-arrow in Terminal reloads the previous command):
curl -s -L http://phobos.apple.com/version |\
grep -i restore |\
grep '_3.' | open -f
The results will look something like URLs ending with this:
iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw
The model number indicates which unit has downloadable firmware. As of right now, only the iPhone 3G S firmware has been updated. That's the 2,1 iPhone model. Yes, the 1,2 iPhone 3G model was considered a revision of the first generation 1,1 iPhone as it only had moderate hardware changes. The two iPods are 1,1 and 2,1 for the first and second generation.
(No, for those wondering in the comments, you cannot download the 2,1 firmware and install it on your iPhone or iPhone 3G -- it will only work with the 3G S.)
To download, copy the URL and paste it into Safari's download window or use any other favorite method to retrieve the firmware. Then hold the Option key and click Update in iTunes. Navigate to the firmware (the ipsw file), select it, and 3.0's good to go. Of course, you can also download directly through iTunes as soon as the update is available.

jailbreak does not equal SIM unlock people.
Software unlock for all models should be available "shortly after 3.0 release" (I'm betting this afternoon).
ultrasn0w (CARRIER UNLOCK, NOTHING TO DO WITH JAILBREAK, SOFTWARE UNLOCK, ETC) will be released Friday. If you're on AT&T legitimately, you don't need this.-
-
jailbreaking doesn't touch the network-level stuff. SIM locking, Baseband, all that jazz. It's entirely on the OS level. At it's root, the only thing it does, period, is let you run programs not from the App Store. These programs are sometimes 'normal' in that they show up on the springboard like every app and exit when you close. Or sometimes they stay in memory (such as the lock screen apps, or SBSettings). Or sometimes they even run completely in the background without you notcing it (E-mail status bar notifiers, SSH service, etc)
Unlocking, on the other hand, deals (almost?) entirely at the network-level SIM stuff and doesn't really care about jailbreaking other than that it's a prequisite (I think?). All it does is tell your cell phone "Hey you're unlocked now don't check for SIM locks" so you can use any SIM card on any carrier. This is all it's for.
If you're on an AT&T plan that's under contract like a normal person, there's no reason to unlock the phone. It's only for people who want to use the iPhone on, say, T-Mobile. Or a Pay-As-You-Go. Or something. -

I actually talked to Rogers customer service about this last week. I currently have the $15 iPhone value pack which came with 2500 text messages but the lady told me it's been updated to also include 1000 MMS as well (or at least I think it was 1000).
Unfortunately though, people without MMS in their plans will be charged 50 cents per incoming MMS. Which sucks because I don't want to make friends pay to receive my messages. -

My phone is hosed. I updated it, it wanted me to register with apple for some reason, typed in my old information, it then proceeded to download and install it, iphone rebooted.
It now wants me to attach it to iTunes (has the little USB/iTunes symbol on the screen). I do that, it tries to connect to the apple store, and just times out.
I'm hoping it's just because the servers are flooded and not something wrong with my phone. But..regardless as of this moment, my phone is just sitting there and unusable. -

yeah it seems they overhauled contacts because I can either see contacts by "Groups" or "All Contacts on my iPhone" or antoher button for "Exchange xxx@xxx.com"
This seems really nice but helpfully blowing away all of my existing family and friends contacts who were not a part of exchange was kind of not so nice. :( -

HELP! Okay so I set it to update and went outside. Came back and the iPhone is displaying a picture that indicates that I should connnect it to iTunes. When I do so, the phone loads and then it says "We could not complete your iTunes Store request. The network connection timed out". And now I cannot do anything but eject my phone. wtf?

I mean people w/o iPhones, at all.
I have a Razr and want an iPhone, but I'm not navigable for upgrade pricing until November. If I'm willing to make that big of an upgrade in phone service, they should at least knock the price down a bit more.
Hell, I think it's cheaper to cancel my existing service and get an iphone, than it is to do the upgrade right now. -

Are you kidding me? Voice memos are incredibly useful when you need to take a quick note but don't have time to type it in.
Well, it would be useful if there were a hard button on the side that started a recording so you could do it with one hand line in a car, like all Windows Mobile phones have. The fact that you have to unlock your device and find and launch the app, and then press the rec button makes it actually kind of useless because it can't be used in the situations I would want to use voice memos!

Mine got noticeably faster. Especially Safari.
Did you do just an update, or did you restore it completely?
If not, I'd suggest a full restore. As long as you're backed up w/ iTunes you won't lose any data, it just takes longer. A full restore is analogous to a format/reinstall of Windows. As soon as it finishes it'll sync your stuff back automatically. Takes about an hour.

AT&T Teethers for 3.0 release.
Dont know if you guys saw this, but a quick way to unlock teethering is to email yourself the ATT_US.ipcc file and open it on the iPhone 3G (and 3GS) with OS 3.0.
Here is the article that talks about it, however, you dont need to downgrade iTunes or any of that mess. according to the comments, you just need to send yourself that above file.
I have found it at http://drop.io/bgwchlj for now. Give it a try and see if it works for you. Make damn sure it is backed up. -
