Evening Reading

Well we had hoped to be announcing something last night regarding the console coverage and extra content around these parts but some unforseen stuff kinda pushed that back a little bit. (Just a day or two) We'll let you guys know what is going on as soon as we do! In the mean time here is some really important stuff you need to read:

- Remember the birth of the web?
- Seeing boobies? Well... ok.
- iPod still hot
- TV is complete, Hulk Hogan is back
- Vlogging Sigh.
- Planet has 3 suns, refused to pay child support

Lastly, congrats SomethingAwul on making an apperanace on G4! I found the interview informative and insightful

Steve Gibson is the cofounder of Shacknews.com. Originally known as sCary's Quakeholio back in 1996, Steve is now President of Gearbox Publishing after selling Shacknews to GameFly in 2009.

it would have been because of the gamespy comments. They wouldn't have been happy been accused of ripping stuff off the shack. At the time Alec made the comments I kind of wondered why he would suggest that. I'm no fan of Gamespy but if Epic let the Shack scan the booklet surely they wouldn't mind a bit of exposure from Gamespy as well?

it was his comments in one of the LNCs on the front page that would have caused the stir i think.

i didn't mind Alec but I do think some of his posts/comments lacked the integrity of what Steve/Maarten/Sander have given us for ages. The Shack is pretty big now, you can't just publically sledge other people and sites without it being noticed.

            Really, look at the screenshots.

Its pretty obivious that they took the media. Sucks that shacknews didn't embed a small image in one of the images to identify it as there property.

I understand that, but without concrete proof you can't just ago ahead and slander them.

Maybe the Shack will start watermarking images?

I know what you're saying, and I do agree, but it's hard to say that a few comments from Alec are much different from the randomness that comes from Maarten and Steve in FP and ER. Is "Me? No u" a sign of a "professional" site? Would any of us be interested in reading the shack if it was yet another "professional" site?

FWIW, I think the business side of things is handled professionally, which is what counts. I think Alec went a step too far by calling out a specific competitor, but at the same time, I'm tired of industry bullshit and backslapping.

Ah yeh I'm not argueing for either Steve or Maartens maturity here haha. I'm talking about integrity, meaning that I don't see those guys confusing issues or taking things too far.

Little things in Alec's LNC posts that were totally misleading annoyed me a lot. I don't mind the humor this site has, it's partly why I come here. But I don't like reading stuff that is misleading on purpose. That's what I mean by integrity.

Maarten specifically responded in a thread speculating this, and said (paraphrase) "it wasn't because of some of his recent articles as some of you have been speculating" (emphasis mine). This seems pretty clear that it was NOT about the Gamespy stuff to me.

It's not clear at all to me. That to me speculates that is more likely about the article on Sony's Ken Kuturagi. Like I said above the articles aren't the problem, it's his post on the LNC that was the issue.

Can you explain why the comments we are talking about have been removed?

Yeah exactly. July 06 = day he made those comments, July 10 = last day on job? That's hardly 14 days apart. Therefore those simply can't have been what got him fired.

If he parted on good terms, we would have seen an official goodbye news item, that either he moved onto another gig or didn't have time for it anymore etc.

Even if they couldn't afford him anymore I think any reasonable business person would then give him a chance to make himself available for new work on the site.

By Marteen saying he wouldn't go into details is just as bad as saying they had problems with him.

              Good luck Alec.

Steve and Alec got in to a fight about who the best giant japanese monster is. Alec said Baragon while Steve said Mechagodzilla. Alec then called Steve a sellout hack. Steve responded by giving the posting tool a mechagodzilla skin. Alec then went on a tirade about anal spelunking turd pirates, I think Steve was mentioned somwhere in there too. So Steve decided it was time for Alec to go. Maarten having just finished his last pop-tart and being in the emotionally distraught state that brings agreed but thinks that Ultraman is the coolest I mean he has Ultra in the name.

It's never cool when someone's out of a job. Hell, I don't even know what that would be like as I've never been unemployed and in financial trouble since I started working.

That said, I'll repeat what I said in one of the earlier threads. I don't like Alec. I found he was an opinionated jerk, personally. I hope the next guy is more Steve or Maarten-esque, where they just print the news and accept all submissions, regardless of their personal tastes or their presumptions of the userbase's tastes.

      repost from earlier
I remember asking for Harry Potter : Azkaban for GBA to be added to Shackreviews, but he wouldn't do it because "It's not something Shackers would play. You can feel free to review it here in the LNC comments!" where no one will read it, and it won't be added to the search, which is a complete load of horseshit. I remember being cranky because:
      1. People here like Harry Potter. Just you wait and see this weekend.
      2. It was a good card-based RPG, Harry Potter or not.

The guy wasn't really a jerk but he definitely wasn't professional in his writing.

Late Night Consoling is a major headline every night and shouldn't use the same type of language in Werd or Evening Reading. Some of his writing seemed like it came word-for-word from some high school kid who didn't know the difference between professional writing and the language you use at home and with friends.

It is a blog, pretty much. One that I've been addicted to for eight-odd years, but a blog nonetheless.

Gussy it up with Shackreviews, LNC, the odd article (I REALLY wish Jason got to write more of those), we still know what the shack is at its core.

This isn't bad, btw. If it wasn't I wouldn't keep coming here multiple times a day.
