Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition coming to PS4 and Switch

Time to round up some friends once more – no GBAs required.

Just in case you missed out on Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles when it first debuted on the GameCube, you're about to get a chance to try it out on a brand new console. Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2018, and it's coming to PlayStation 4 and Switch next year.

The game features friends gathering together for a multiplayer adventure to collect crystals to protect the world from Miasma, and while there's a single-player component, it's obviously built for multiplayer up to four players. Previously it allowed players to join in via Game Boy Advance units, so it remains to be seen whether this will require multiple Switch units or simply Joy-Cons to play, or how the PlayStation 4 version will handle online play.

This will mark the first time the game has ever been released on a non-Nintendo console with the PlayStation 4, and it will no doubt court plenty of players, especially since the original GameCube release sold over one million copies worldwide. It features a bit different of a vibe from the other classic Final Fantasy games, but it's still wholly enjoyable, especially if you've got friends around.

Looking forward to giving the game a try now that it's not such a pain to get up and get started? Make sure you mark your calendars for next year. And be sure to check back at the Shacknews 2019 Video Game Release Schedule to see everything else that's on offer. It's going to be a very packed year.

Hmm... I hope they do some pretty extensive work to make it more fun and less tedious... :(

I had a lot of fun playing it when it was released on the GameCube. The trick is that you have to play it with 4 players. I can see that it could be a bit boring if you were trying it single-player, though.

Was thinking of grabbing it to play with a friend. 1 friend. I'm worried it'd turn into "1 Bucket Guy + 1 Guy having fun" though...

I played it co-op with one other person and the game is set up in such a way, you have to trade off on bucket duty as circumstances arise. Doesn’t mean we still didn’t get on each other’s case, haha.

It's only the literal best Final Fantasy score in the entire extended franchise, and that's coming from someone who absolutely loves Maria and Draco, amongst other songs, from Final Fantasy VI.

Makes me wish I still had gaming friends. We had a ton of fun with Crystal Chronicles in college.

This time it has online co-op, not just local! I’m not the biggest Final Fantasy fan, but Crystal Chronicles is a fantastic game. Had a lot of fun with it way back when.
