NBA 2K18 Will Not Support Amiibo Functionality

NBA 2K18 will let you take a console-quality game on the go, but the developers aren’t worried about including Amiibo support.

NBA 2K18 comes to Nintendo Switch later this year, bringing with it a complete console experience that you can also enjoy in handheld mode. That should be exciting for sports fans, but there is less thrilling news to go with it: Amiibo support is not part of the package.

According to an updated Gamespot post, a representative from 2K Sports has officially confirmed NBA 2K18 on Nintendo Switch will not offer Amiibo support. There was some speculation it might, particularly since various other high-profile titles from third parties have included or will include it (the upcoming port of Skyrim will let players dress their character as Link from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, for instance).

For those who don’t know, Amiibo are collectible plastic figurines that Wii U, 3DS, and Switch hardware can “read” using WFC functionality. They resemble the Skylanders collectibles, in that they sometimes unlock additional in-game functionality. The big difference is that they often work across multiple titles, offering bonuses to character health and strength, or useful items or skins.

If NBA 2K18 had included Amiibo support, it’s difficult to know how that might have looked. There may have been custom sneakers, or perhaps certain characters might have dropped onto the court for a quick game of hoops. Such bonuses likely would have lengthened development time, however, so it makes sense that the developer would prioritize getting the game up and running on the new hardware.

NBA 2K18 releases for Nintendo Switch as a download on September 15, 2017. The physical edition will come along a month later, on October 17. The last NBA 2K release on a Nintendo console was an edition of the wildly successful NBA 2K13 in late 2012. Are you ready for more hoops action?
