E3 2017: Bloodstained Gameplay Interview With Koji Igarashi

The spiritual successor to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is coming to Nintendo Switch.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night generated quite a bit of interest in its successful Kickstarter as a spiritual successor of Castlevania: Symphony of the Knight. The game was originally planned for Wii U, but is now instead coming to Nintendo Switch sometime in the first half of 2018. Koji Igarashi stopped by to talk about the 2D platformer, progress on the game and how it carries on where Castlevania left off.

The footage there looks pretty nice, I think they've done a good job of translating this to a modern 3D/2D hybrid. I'm hoping that the environmental art and graphics really stress the differences between the areas, it seems like that could be difficult to translate into 3D. You know, I wonder if it would be beneficial to use some form of (light, not overwhelming) cel shading here.

I'm really not a fan of the 2.5D sidescroller presentation, but this does look like it works better than most, wish they were doing more with light and shadow, though. Everything I've seen has looked kinda overbright. But as long as the control are solid I'll be fine with it. If it's the only way I can play another IGA Castlevania then so be it.

As for cel shading, the main character and enemies definitely look like they have some outline to make them pop a bit more.

Character and enemy art looks fantastic.

The backgrounds and environments look terrible. It looks like My First Unity Game.

Effects could use some work, too.

But its a 2018 release, so they have plenty of time! I hope they can pull off a successful new IP!
