When I read "art" I think it's something someone does regardless of the profit from the final result. To me, once the art becomes secondary to the monetary result, it's no longer art.
It's one thing to absorb a pay check because people feel what your doing holds value, it's entirely different to accept a pay check because people want you to do something.
Your friend was an artist when he was selling floppies in zip-lock bags, his drive was to code for fun (art) and the money was second.
Once houses and other jobs become functions of his coding he's no longer an artist but an employee, and sadly one hurt by a major issue in his industry. It's not to say he didn't still feel he was creating art, but it became secondary to the monetary, and in my mind ceased be so at that point.
I don't envy game developers, unless content is being pushed from a server these days it almost seems pointless expect not to suffer a huge loss from warez.
Probably one of the reasons MMOs are so profitable, controlling access and the content really limits peoples options once it comes to warez.. yea I know there's private servers, but I can't imagine they support the level of stablity or player base as the actual live servers.
