Xbox One rebounds after DRM reversal, but PS4 still leads poll

Unsurprisingly, Xbox One has become more attractive since dropping its used game and online policy. However, it still lags behind PS4 due to its higher price.

Less than one week after E3, Microsoft announced that Xbox One would no longer place any restrictions on used games and would no longer require regular internet access. The reversal isn't particularly surprising, especially after the tremendous backlash the company received due to their policies.

We've been tracking interest in both next-gen consoles amongst GameFly fans, and it's clear that Microsoft's backpedaling has helped it win back some fans. Whereas last week only 18 percent of surveyed individuals were more interested in the One, the figure jumped to 27 percent this week.

Fans like Andre Smith point out that "X1 was always my go to. Only thing they needed to change was the offline playing of games." Kevin Dieudonne says that "Xbox games are better than PS4" and that "all Sony had was the DRM."

However, while Xbox One has rebounded a bit, the figures still heavily favor PlayStation 4. For some, the damage has already been done. Zachary Gearwar told us that he still plans on getting a PS4 because "Sony knew gamers never wanted any DRM restrictions from the beginning; Microsoft merely caved in fear of losing their customers." Others are still swayed by the price difference between the two consoles. "I can use the extra 100 bucks to buy a game," Jeff Gregoire told us, noting PS4's lower price point. Brigham Bush points to Microsoft's "restrictions on indie devs," adding "I also refuse to have a Kinect."

We'll let this poll simmer down for a bit, as we get closer to the holiday season. However, it's clear that Microsoft's decision to back away from its most onerous policies has paid off. There's still a long way to go before Xbox One can win public opinion, but at least the console war doesn't seem so one-sided anymore.

it's all cheap wine, and they're all the devil. they all care about profit and retaining customer base and they all want you to buy massive amounts of DLC and day-one titles. NONE OF THEM CARE ABOUT YOU with the exception of keeping you happy in their ecosystem to make purchases.

But that goes for everyone. The customers that make their purchase decision based mostly on price are concerned mostly about what? Their own personal wallet.

At the end of the day it was retail pressure and low pre-order numbers that caused a change in policy, not MS actually listening to or wanting to concede to consumer demand from a vocal minority, and to believe this won't come back in some form after MS invested a ton of time and money into developing a system to manage and control used game distribution is pretty crazy, we're not done with this by a long shot IMO.

Exactly. MS didn't listen to their costumers, they listened to the sound of Sony ripping them a new one

You cannot offer that opinion as fact because: you have no idea if you are right or not. The facts here, is that Microsoft changed their stance, to match the desires of the public (which they reenforced via their buying habits).

And we should applaud them for doing that. Sony certainly didn't with the PS3 until well after it launched.

It's right there: "Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One."

I think you have a very warped perception of what caused Microsoft to take this position to start with. They were responding to a wish-list of developer and publisher requests! That's it! You want to know why Microsoft did something that (you think) is incredibly stupid? They were catering to their publishers at least as much as to their consumers. Don't think for a moment that Activision, or Ubi, or EA or anybody else did not love the idea of getting a slice of the resale pie and all but eliminating piracy with an always-on verification to boot. None of them wanted to take the heat along with Microsoft after this development became publicized, obviously.

I guess something hit me this morning that maybe they don't have their shit together this generation.

Granted, all I did was register my email so that I have the PSN name 'mancide'. I haven't cancelled an Xbox One pre-order yet, nor did I pre-order a PS4.

I guess I'm worried that the Xbox LIVE Gold games program might now die in December and not continue on next year. I don't have a lot of time to spend on games, but if they were going to give me one free game a month I would stick around for that.

Maybe it's also that I'm less and less tied to my gamerscore number than I was just a few weeks ago, and would like to get back to "gaming to game"... IDK

I've been pretty well viewed as an Xbox guy since I have 150,000+ gamerscore and for a long time was big on engaging the chatty with various gamerscore competitons.

I haven't been the one to jump into fanboy fights, and I did seem to champion the Xbox One because I felt their messaging was not very good. I was just simply trying to explain what I was understanding, and what I thought others were misunderstanding.

We may disagree, but I listen to you because I respect your opinion. You often have knowledge and stances I do not and can articulate them well. You also listen to others and will agree if you are convinced by another point of view. It's the difference between you and some of the other people on here who I just cannot speak to because they never listen.

I've never taken the gamerscore ribbing seriously. But, I have stopped caring as much about it on my own lately for various other reasons.

And yea, you've provided me some things that I would not have otherwise known.

I still feel that GameStop's practices go a bit beyond there being a first-sale doctrine. I do like to think I can sell my physical discs when done, and I don't typically sell them to GameStop unless I can't make more selling them person-to-person on Amazon.

But you have to admit, convincing someone who walked up to the counter with a sealed new copy, that the "used copy" is "just as good", while not an outright lie, benefits GameStop more than it does the people that created that content.

That being said, I was OK with the system MS was proposing. Maybe it was because I had an idealized fantasy world that may have not materialized (flash sales, discounted digital titles, a true "family share plan"). I'm just less enthusiastic about maintaining the status quo, which I think is why the PSN+ side of things is so enticing to me. Because I've seen how they've maintained that, and they have said that will continue with the PS4. I don't have that guarantee on the Microsoft side. Xbox LIVE Gold games is only guaranteed through December.

I agree with you about those policies, but that's why I chose to avoid Gamestop. They're an evil entity for what they do, not just on pushing used games (which is scummy, but not bad), but for being obnoxious in every way. If you didn't preorder they magically don't have enough content for you. Employees steal preorder bonuses and pretend they've run out. They will even over subscribe on preorders and refuse to refund you.

Those are the parts that I find evil. The used game stuff is scummy, but understandable for a publically-traded customer. Arn't we told that kind of profit-making is good for the economy?

Note, I don't agree with it, I hate the shareholderization of the US market, but until that problem is fixed, Gamestop has no reason to do better.

MS came across as even weaker and less organized after their recent announcement. It actually gave me even less confidence in them as a company. All of this just goes to show you how important PR can be. The system would probably do fine based simply on it's hardware and the games... but the shitstorm they have created around it... really makes it difficult to like them right now.

Unless the new psn is lacking in features, I really think microsoft is in danger of losing Xbox live as the defacto online service for consoles and a lot of xbox's profits and potential hinges on live. The handful of my friends that have already put their money down on ps4 preorders, while they consider this is a nice gesture, only brings the xbone up to par and that isn't enough to get them to switch their preorders.
