Uncharted 2 Getting More Competitive via DLC, Probably Not More Cooperative

10
As Naughty Dog prepares to release its latest PlayStation 3 exclusive on October 13, the company has confirmed that it will support Uncharted 2 with downloadable content, though the new stuff may be limited to its competitive multiplayer mode. "What you'll probably see is more of the competitive type: more maps, more modes," designer Justin Richmond told Eurogamer. "The co-op stuff is hugely time-intensive and the size of it--the physical download size--is huge, so that's probably not an option."

A demo sampling the game's co-op and competitive multiplayer, but not its single-player campaign, is currently available as a free download in the PlayStation 3's online store.

"I'm not going to say never," Richmond added, offering a faint sliver of hope to cooperative enthusiasts. "But for the foreseeable future we're not going to be doing that."

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

Is the multiplayer actually any fun in this? I just can't summon up any interest for that aspect, though I'll be getting it for the SP.

Have you tried it? Demo's been out for a week now, and runs for one more week till release. Offers co-op, co-op arena, MP Deathmatch and MP Objective modes on 4 maps. It's quite fun, and the climbing/traversal mechanics of Uncharted really change the way the game is played (vs a typical 3rd person shooter).

It feels like playing Uncharted, but with other people. Maybe less cover-taking and more movement than in Uncharted 1, but it certainly has the same vibe.

It is pretty good: looks and controls great but only has the same modes every other game does.

You haven't tried it? Wow yea its great. I like Socom better though online as in this game the melee kills drive me nuts. However when I get the game I'm sure i'll play it online.

Uncharted 2 is a 97 on metacritic, thats astoundingly good. And Demon's Souls is out too and at a 90. Also Ratchet & Clank A Crack in Time is coming at the end of the month. PlayStation 3 is just on fire lately with excellent exclusives. Sony should space these things out better.

I have zero issue w/ sony giving me all three at once. I haven't turned on my PS3 in months.

I'm a PC FPS player who never really liked playing shooters with a controller.

Uncharted 1 was probably my first console shooter which I owned and played through. I kinda got used to the controls and for the singleplayer, I don't think I felt that they gimped my ability to aim all that much.

In Uncharted 2 multiplayer, where precise aiming is more important (human enemies are a greater challenge than bots), playing with a controller is sometimes a bit of a problem. I'm level 10 now, so I've already played a bit. The game is fun for a console shooter, and the 3rd person view, the ability to climb up stuff and take cover is also interesting. What bothers me most is how long it takes to search for a game. Peer to peer sucks ass.

I'm buying Uncharted 2 for the singleplayer, but the multiplayer is a nice feature which I'll probably enjoy for a while, too, until Modern Warefare 2 comes out.
