Hello all, I've noticed that we've had an influx of new players checking out this game and have many questions. I've created an FAQ for newcomers to the game.

Is this game crossplay?

Yes, the game is crossplay across all platforms: Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

Do I need to pay to play online on Nintendo Switch?

Yes, you need to pay $20 a year to access Nintendo's online service to play this game online with friends.

Is this game dead?

Well, it's "dead" in the sense that you play as a ghost, but otherwise, no, the game is not "dead." It has a dedicated player base, and there are two active Discords as well.

Is the DLC free?

Over the course of the year, the makers of the game, Illfonic, have released four free DLCs.

What is the Ecto Edition?

The Ecto Edition is a soft relaunch of the game across all platforms, including all four DLCs and new additional ghosts, cosmetics, and maps.

If I already purchased this game, do I need to buy the Ecto Edition?

No, the Ecto Edition is a soft rename of the game to celebrate its one-year anniversary. If you purchased it on the Epic Games Store or on console before this, you already have everything the current edition offers.

Is the game third person?

Ghost players are in third person mode, while Ghostbusters take on a first-person viewpoint. There are no current plans or options to change these viewpoints. Ghostbusters are always first person, and ghosts are always in third person view.

Can I play offline, or do I need to be online to play?

The game is completely playable offline without Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, or Nintendo Live services. You can play through the complete story alone with bots and host individual matches in private lobbies by yourself without having to pay for an online subscription service.

Is there local co-op or split screen?

No, there is no option for local co-op or split screen, either online or offline.

Does the game feature cross-progression? Can I continue my progress on Xbox if I start playing the game on PC?

Unfortunately, the game doesn't offer cross-progression or cross-save. Each platform has individual progression, with the exception of Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5.

Is there more DLC planned, or is this it?

The 12 months of free DLC on the roadmap have been completed, but there have been no official announcements about stopping updates. It's safe to say that the developers likely have future plans.

Why isn't this like the 2009 game?

It's not trying to be. The 2009 game had original screenwriters and the full cast of the original Ghostbusters involved. Spirits Unleashed is meant to be an online experience but also features an interesting short story. If you're looking for something like the 2009 game, you'll always have that option to play that one. However, spirits unleashed does have a story mode, albeit a bit short, but if you're looking for something narrative-driven that's not competitive, this might not be the game for you.

My contracts keep resetting to zero? What's happening?

To complete contracts, you must finish the match. Leaving the game when the contract pops up in the middle will reset the contract. Make sure to finish games and wait until you've loaded into the next one before leaving, just to be safe.

Does the game have any other modes?

Technically no, if you're not interested in online competitive play, you can take on ghost bounties which are cooperative haunts you must complete with varying factors of difficulty and adjustments made to make it harder facing the AI ghosts.

I could ever catch the ghost? Is the ghost OP?

Teamwork is the name of the game. While it is possible to capture a ghost solo, it is difficult. So be sure to communicate with your team and work together to win matches against good ghost players.

I can't win as the ghost, It's impossible.

The ghost is extremely hard to learn and takes a while to master. If you're serious about getting good as a ghost player you just need to practice and watch streams of experience ghost players or vods to see how they play and how they move. Remember practice makes perfect.

I select ghost, but the game keeps making me a Ghostbuster or vice versa.

While you do have a preference to play as a ghost, a buster or either, the game does its best to rotate who is the ghost player and who are the Ghostbuster players. If five people all have Ghostbuster as a preference, somebody has to play as the ghost. Remember that the preference option is just that.

I keep getting put in online games with bots.

In order to cut down on queue times the game will create bots to fill games. Luckily there's a drop in drop out way of entering a game for both buster and ghost. I suggest either hanging in a lobby long enough for it to be filled or leaving and rotating until you find a full one.
