Dark Souls 3 is chock full of creepy crawlies to kill, but if you really want to be prepared for all the boss fights coming your way, you’re going to need to level your character up and increase those stats. This guide will teach you where you need to go to level up, and who you’ll need to talk to.

The first thing you’ll want to do is play through the game’s tutorial area, the Cemetery of Ash. One you have defeated the boss there, Ludex Gundyr, it’s time to make your way into the next area.

Open up the gate and continue up the sloping hill, taking out any enemies you find along your way, until you make your way to the top of the hill, where you will find a large stone building. This is Firelink Shrine, the main hub of the game world, and one of the places that you’ll spend most of your time returning to over the course of your journey through the world of Lothric. Head inside the Shrine, and make your way down to the lowest level to find the Firekeeper.

This is your most trusted companion in the entire world. Talking to the Firekeeper will allow you to do many things, including level your character up. Chat with her, then select the Level Up option when it appears in the dropdown list.

Once you’ve selected the Level Up options, the stat leveling screen will appear and you’ll need to select which attributes you want to upgrade from the list on the left. When changed the number will appear blue, and the changes that it makes will appear on the right side of the screen in the same color. If you look above the attribute section you will see an area marking out how many souls you currently have, how many Souls are required to level up, and your current level. When you change some of your attributes you will then see a new number beside your current level. This is the level that you will become after you confirm your leveling.

Choose the attributes you want to level up, make sure they all line up with what you’re trying to achieve, and then confirm the leveling in the bottom of the list. This will take your Souls and level your character up, allowing you deal more damage, have more Stamina, Focus Points, Health Points, or whatever your attribute upgrades effected.

Once you have leveled up, simply return to the Bonfire, or drop the Coiled Sword into the nearby fire pit, to be able to teleport to other parts of the game and take on new bosses and collect more Souls. Make sure to return to Firelink Shrine and chat with the Firekeeper often to spend your Souls and level you character up.
