Morning Discussion

You can see a lady's mammary glands within the first two seconds of the Mafia II demo if you fancy, I discovered while giving it a whirl over lunch, in one of the "over fifty" vintage Playboy centrefolds included in 2K Czech's mob game. Collecting one of the issues scattered throughout the world instantly fills your screen with the centrefold. The demo's lovely but the ongoing Playboy product placement in video games is dreadful.

When you have an incomplete world--like any work of art, be it game, novel, play, song, painting and so on--what you choose to include and to exclude is significant. What you decide upon is what you think is important, relevant and meaningful for your creation.

Playboy was undeniably a cultural force when it fired up in the Fifties, a mark of the era, and it's likely a 'real' Vito might read it. However, rather than simply having the Playboy brand present in the game world, Mafia II has filled the world with collectable magazines displaying a high-res pair of breasts for your erotic enjoyment. This is for the player, not Vito, because you're surely a bloody bloke and blokes love tits, don't you all?

Course you do my son, I bet you get all the birds dontya? It's too bad you had to stop watching pornography to play this game but we managed to sneak in some jubblies for you, son. I know you gamers love pictures of naked ladies, innit? Get in there my son!

It's worth noting that this was back when Playboy really was worth reading for its articles but nope, tits are all I'm getting. It's bizarre, it's alienating and it's damned stupid.

Nothing stings like realizing all the giftcards in your wallet are empty when you were planning on coming home with StarCraft 2 when your trial is expiring soon :(

Well, yeah, that's what I did as a backup. My first plan was to burn the giftcards that were eating room in my wallet with buying a boxed copy. That did not work, so instead I'm ordering online. Huzzah, the end result is the same: StarCraft II!

Gift cards are a scam that allows companies to hold onto and invest your money while you wait to buy stuff. Avoid them at all costs.

Now now, this isn't a criticism thread. I didn't buy them for myself, after all. They were gift cards. And of course they're a scam, they're like tokens at arcades or disney dollars. But still, if someone gives me one, I'm going to use it.

how are gift cards a scam? It's not the companies fault if you're too lazy to use it :(

Well, it's kind of banking on you not using them, especially when they used to deplete over time if you didn't use them.

"Scam" might be a bit strong, but they're still basically cash that you can only spend in certain places with a fancy wrapper and a time limit.

Recently they're working on that, but previously they could expire and lose value over time.

That's why I like Amazon's discounts. That shit just gets automatically applied to purchases without you even thinking about it. There have been several times I've bought mp3s or games and it was free or heavily discounted then I remembered I kept getting random discounts from buying previous things.

Yes it's the entire game, you just have a 7 hour timelimit on being connected to Battle.net.
