Need for Speed Online Screenshot Shows Off UI

Still alive despite mass layoffs and the closure of its central office, Need for Speed developer Black Box has unveiled new details on Need for Speed World Online, its free PC racing MMO.

The new screenshot to the left is a "work-in-progress image so shouldn't be judged as showing the final quality of the game," the Need for Speed Blog cautions. It's meant to show off the customizable user interface.

"Instead of a traditional console view of a game, we're using a user-selectable gadget interface designed specifically for the PC," explained producer Scott Henshaw. "

"A lot of gamers now have more than one monitor so you could keep the game window entirely clean and then have all the gadgets sit in the other monitor. We think it's about time PC gamers had games that allowed them to arrange their information their way."

Developed in conjunction with EA Shanghai, Need to Speed World Online will launch in Asia this summer, with a North American debut following later in the winter.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

Didn't they do this already with Need For Speed: Motor City Online? And it failed? Big time?

Yeah... it was a huge flop. I'm curious why they're releasing it in China first too.

Asia has tons of successful free-to-play MMO games. It's pretty much the best market to launch a game like this. If it does well, I imagine they will bring it to North America, Europe, etc.

1% of population of China is > 1% of population of all other game playing nations combined.

Financially it may have flopped, but I think it was fun.

Sounds like this one will be free (no monthly fee?) and if so it will probably have a cash shop that you can pay to buy upgrades or something. I think MCO would have been better with that model. People didn't want to pay the monthly fee for it, or something.
