EA Suggests Dead Space, Mirror's Edge Sequels Are Safe Despite Cuts

While lowered expectations have caused Electronic Arts to consider axing some games, the company has suggested that the planned sequels for EA Redwood Shores' Dead Space and DICE's Mirror's Edge will not be affected by the upcoming cuts.

"Dead Space looks like a long-term big winner for us," EA CEO John Riccitiello stated during a conference call today. "Mirror's Edge is one that was very strongly reviewed. That one's gonna go forward--we'll be looking at some issues around the design to make sure strong IP is married with strong business."

Riccitiello added: "Many times, what happens with new IP is the first edition doesn't generate the units that subsequent editions could generate."

The CEO also touched on the recent release of Mythic's Warhammer Online, stating his belief that the PC MMO "will continue to perform very very well."

I'm glad they think Dead Space is worth keeping around, because I sure as hell did enjoy it.

I'm sad they think Mirror's Edge is worth keeping around, because it sure as hell felt like a steaming pile of wasted potential.

But he made it sound like they have some idea of that and will try to waste less potential next time.

That, at least, gives me hope, that he aknowledges it had design issues. I think the story was pretty damn bland too though.

Did Dead Space sell badly? I thoroughly enjoyed it and really anticipate a sequel after that cliffhanger ending.

cliffhanger ending?! It was as cliched as any horror title that ends the way it ended.

just because it's cliche, doesn't mean it can't be a cliffhanger.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Cliffhanger just leaves room for the sequel.

Ditto. First game to really feel "scary" in years (at least for me).

Even if most of those scares were of the "BOO!" variety.

Agreed. Dead Space was easily the best game I played all year.

Dead Space was one of the most fresh/enjoyable gaming experience I had in a couple of years. There were a whole lot of neat new ideas, all implemented well. I'll be looking forward to a sequel.

DS was my favorite game this year. I really hope they'll axe the LAME Stasis field in any sequel. Isaac was supposed to be an engineer, not a freaking wizard.
